Just curious if anyone ever uses bobcat flagging that makes a noise? I'm not talking about wind chimes that people put on their decks, but maybe something more subtle. Could be something subtle like VHS tape hitting branches as it blows in the wind...

It might sound crazy but I had the same thing in mind, kinda. I use Christmas tinsel but the snow and rain can render it pretty flat. I took those really flimsy bottles water comes in and inserted the tinsel inside and drilled holes in the caps to insert string to suspend the bottles. The flimsy bottles themselves reflect a good deal of light as they dent easily and act like a prism. The tinsel still reflects as well even though it's inside a bottle.

I thought the bottles themselves might make a bit of noise and act as an attraction on those windier nights that tend to tangle my flags. I didn't get a chance to try them out as my season ended. I'll try them next season, Lord willing. [Linked Image]

I have done a few things over the years. Sure fire guaranteed cat catchers?? Can't say for sure, but I think it cant hurt. I make a flag that moves in the wind and rattles or clinks in a pop can hanging from a branch. I take some 14 ga wire and connect 2 pieces with loops. Then on the longer wire I attach a coffee maker filter. I slide a beer or pop can with the end cut out ( the end opposite the opening) over the wire that will attach to the tree branch. When the flag moves with the wind the wire strikes the pop can and makes a clink or a ding. Something else I do is make a critter type device from the foam you buy in Wal-Mart. Cut it to look like a critter any way U want it. A little grey paint... maybe a touch of black paint … and some of those eyes you buy in wally worlds craft section glued to the "critter". I put the "critter" in a big dirt hole.... the cat can see down the hole and sticks around awhile. You can also use these in an old log set or cubby set or I like to make two piles of sticks with a walk thru set up and have the "critter " under a pile but visible to the cat as he works the set. Totally legal. No meat or fur or feathers. I did try to use an attractor from a LED and battery pack. The other set ups are better I think. [Linked Image]

I've wondered how far off its intended path you can pull a cat. I've seen evidence in the snow where a cat beelined straight to one of my flags from quite a distance only to satisfy its curiosity away from my set.

Someone mentioned putting the flag directly behind your set. I missed a big cat late this season because I had my set three feet off to the side of my flag. I thought the flag and the scent post would do their jobs independent of each other. The cat went straight to the flag and walked right past my set without giving it any attention. Painful when I waited over forty days for that cat to come through the area.

Did it see the flag at a distance or were you on location? Cat saw the flag a lot closer to it than you think?

Dont feel bad about your flag causing you to miss a cat. thats more common than most flaggers think.

I was on location, I knew a cat hunted there but I'm pretty sure I pulled it off its path. Tracks in the snow. An abandoned apple orchard on a sloping hill. Grouse and hare use it hard.

I tried a couple pieces of that glow in the dark duct tape, but it hasn't helped.

I did reflector tape my first year until I read about the CD's on here, I cut them in half and drill a hole in them
