Got a question for the fox trappers on here. I’m not targeting foxes, but I’m catching them. I’m happy with the catches, but I’ve noticed the sets I’ve caught all the fox in have had the trap set farther back than normal on the coyote sets. Is this preferred for fox?

Now you might ask why my sets are back a little from the dirtholes or pipes? Based on the trail cam pics I’m getting, coyotes working the sets stand back more working a set than up close. Seems to have improved my catches so I’ve been trying it more.

Always set my trap up next to the dirt hole for foxes and coyote.

How far back of the hole are you setting?

There is no set distance in my opinion. It all depends how your type of set is constructed.

Well, some of my sets the trap ends up farther than the “standard”. Some end up about a foot back. All depends on what the natural vegetation shows, if that makes sense. I’ll dig my dirt hole or place my pipe, then look at the most likely spot I “think” he’ll approach and step. Sometimes it’s close or “standard” but sometimes it back a ways. On trail cams I’ve had more pans missed you close than farther away.

Wow ! That coyote did a number on that area , you may need a new plan for the remake .

Haha! Was thinking about that when I walked up. Gonna go off to the side and set another dirt hole. May be stupid, but I reset that initial trap right back in the same bed this morning. Figure something may come in nosing around and hit the bare spot. Tried to scatter some of the grass under the dirt around to guide it just a little.
