So the guys putting up nu.bers are either in heavily populated areas or they are just that good or both.

Hound hunting is no different than any other hunting, there are good dogs and bad. Good hunters and bad. Heavy game populations will make hunters and dogs alike look much better than they are. On the same token, bad conditions and lack of game or game movement can make a good one look poor. I don’t coyote hunt my dogs but I bear, hog, and coon hunt them and have in several different states. If I kill 50 coons a year hear at home I’ve done something. I’ve treed that many in a week in other places. Some places or times of year bear and hogs will run all day, other places they pop up like coons and bay up at the first contact a dog makes. 99% of people that complain about hounds or don’t agree with it will never understand it or what it takes to make a top tier hound or houndsmen. Read the 1000 coyote post. I know many houndsmen that go that hard 11 months of the year and their dog power shows it. I have to hunt 3-4 days a week 10 months of the year to keep mine in shape and at the level I expect them to be. Although, I have no problems sharing the woods with trappers as I hobby trap some myself. Why should trappers expect houndsmen to stay out of their way. It’s the same old selfish attitude that deer hunters have and Floridians that own 1 acre in the middle of a thousand. We will dismantle ourselves from the inside. If trappers or houndsmen get shut down the other one will be soon to follow!

Coon dogs don't seem common around here anymore, presumably largely b/c of coon prices.

Prices mean little to hounds men. Dogs run a $0.50 coon just as hard as they run a $50 coon. And the music is the same too. That's what matters to the real hound guy.

Dogs live 12 plus years. Hide prices fluctuate a lot in that amount of time. You just don't sell the dogs when prices go down! I always have at least three broke dogs and several upcoming prospects. Good dogs aren't trained, they're born.

Pulled all my traps a couple weeks ago for some coon hunters coming in. Best thing is, I get to join along and see where the den trees are!! I trap private land and don’t mind pulling or tripping when the mangers ask me if it would be a problem. I seem to have better luck when moving around anyways. 2-3 weeks at one then 2-3 weeks at another then back.

Mostly competition type hunters around here. They'll kill one occasionally, or the dogs will actually. Mostly they don't want to kill them though. They just wanna run the dogs and listen to the hunt. I enjoy the dogs, and have dog hunted myself (before I found trapping). I'm not allowed on some property because they hunt it. They aren't allowed on some property I trap, but the dogs don't know that. Mostly, I have lots of property their dogs are liable to tree on or run through. Personally, I don't care. I think there's stuff the dogs will get that I won't catch, and stuff I'll catch that the hunters won't kill. My issue is only when my equipment is damaged or stolen. Other outdoorsmen, with other methods, are just a fact of outdoor life.

I trap for fun. I skin 'em for the money!

Are these same hounds that run yotes very effective at coon, bear, or bobcat? Maybe they specialize, I'm not sure. Must take a lotta $ to keep those dogs fed year round. They sure do bark. Got a a group of them living by where I'm trapping right now. Seems like they bark hours on end.

I bet there are good ones, but not where I live. I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the number of my fences that have been run through with coyote pickups. Plus it is impossible in our country to run a coyote and not trespass. I’ve seen catch dogs kill farm dogs. Chase dogs kill them selves jumping ditches, or badly injure them selves in barbwire fences and the owners just drive off without them. I can’t put in words how much I dislike the ones we have. Although the last couple years it has really slowed down. Just like anything a couple bad apples can really spoil things.

This has been my opinion too, although I've never proven it.

We have a few groups in sw wi, one gets roughly 50-60 a year. our main issue is trespassing and them thinking they have the right. the other issue is they are never out of their truck which causes issues with actually shooting the coyotes. The trespassing issue could be alleviated by them dropping their arrogant attitude and just politely talking to the land owners if they need to get a dog. other than this im glad they do it and reduce the numbers.
On a side note I did try to talk to the leader about the attitude and trespassing issue and that if he'd just be a little more courtious to land owners he'd get a lot more people on his side. I think it fell on deaf ears but I tried

Never heard of any groups here. Mostly they run hounds after deer on public land all during gun season

4 dedicated groups by me. They run dogs from end of deer season to April. Best one will get around 150 & the rest will get about 70 each. They usually hunt every day.

Same thing here about property lines. Most try to keep their dogs on the right property some don’t. It usually the weekend guy that shows up with no dogs, “hunts” from the road that causes the problems. Some just don’t think. Don’t stop in front of someone’s house, don’t block traffic, etc. some of the hound gus are thinking of not running dogs on the weekends because of this.

Yep, I’ve been denied permission to because of hounds too
