I'm getting ready for next weeks bobcat opener. I had someone reach out to me yesterday who had a bobcat sneak under their small rustic cabin. Has anyone heard of that? I'm thinking if it did it once it might think it's good cover, and come back.

Hard to say but it may be a favorite resting place for it,especially in inclement weather.
Is today the day? It wasn't there today. By the looks of the diverse array of small animal tracks going under the cabin, there must be some small animals for that bobcat to feast on. We've had good weather lately. Maybe inclement weather will send that bobcat back under the cabin. I might make a set near it.

This heat wave is going to make it hard for me to keep non target furbearers like coon/possum/skunk out of my bobcat traps I've waited 6 years for this tag, I hate to have traps plugged up with other furbearers (unless it's a fisher prior to Jan 5th, but I'm struggling to find fisher tracks this year).

It is probably hunting mice under the cabin, or feral cats if any . If so it will be back. It hasn't been back yet. I still check every ~5 days. There's been a guy cutting firewood in the area... maybe he's spooked it

For the 1st time in a month a critter larger than a squirrel went under the cabin (wasn't there yesterday). But I can't decide what it is. Fox or bobcat probably. This is so remote I can't imagine a barn cat would be in the area. And I don't think it's a fisher. Way bigger than any sort of squirrel like animal, too, although not a huge track. Not long enough for a yote in my opinion. Not near any open h20. No pets around last night.
I tried following the tracks but it was gettin dark. I couldnt see any obvious claw marks. The rest of the prints were in fluffy snow, so too hard to distinguish.
It seemed to leave some drag marks in it's stride, which I don't expect from bobcat, but this snow is deep.
A sign of life anyway. Hmmm..... A lot more snow coming tomorrow night. Tough going...

I would use that log as one side of my walk through and close in the other side with a tree limb or brush and put a trap right where that track is.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

I'm so glad I checked back just now & that u guys responded. Thanks. I'm going this afternoon to set it. It finally quit snowing. I was going to put a MB550 there last night but the snow was coming down in blankets so decided to wait til today. I haven't decided how to bait it yet. Yes, I think there's mice under this cabin. It's a very rustic cabin and is kind of built on blocks/piling/stilts. I can't imagine a house or barn cat would be anywhere near this cabin. I wonder if I should flag it...or maybe add more sets further out too. I have 25 sets on this 80 acres already. A 'cabin set,' this will be a 1st for me.

Yeah, I have options since it's right at that building.
I asked, and my friend won't be around, so I can pretty much do what I want w/ this set. I just hope it doesn't take another 30 days to come back like it did this last time. Such crappy weather has me hoping it'll be back sooner. I still wonder if it went silent for a few weeks after the cat set off my 155 fisher trap in late December but didn't get caught. That wss the only even remotely close call I've had, tho I did see tracks in multiple spots ~2 1/2 weeks ago, which I immediately made sets by, but it hasn't been back by. You'd think it'd stumble into 1 1 of these days. I've been thinkin maybe my daily presence walking thru has it on edge.

Advice taken. Set made! Fingers crossed. It's a pass thru set. Exposed pan MB550. Cover hulls covering the trap area. Dirt hole in the far left. (I put a handful of straw in the dirt hole after pic was taken). I'm callin it the 'cabin set.' With this crappy weather (snowin again tonight!) I hope it desires to come back to this cabin b4 1/31. I hung a shiny beer can above it (can't see in the pic). Dirt kicked around the area for eye appeal. Sheeps wool under the corner of the cabin. The other corner of this concrete piling I put some brush in front of so it approaches from this desirable angle. If it comes from under the cabin I'm set up to hopefully get it in this trap too. I have more litte vertical guide sticks than you can see in the pic. A half dozen pieces of firewood strategically placed for guiding, with a few sticks so it doesn't try to step up on the log. If it goes under the cabin or walks by, I'm hoping to get it. It's almost like a double pass thru if you consider the cat could come from left to right (from under the cabin). Time consuming set. It's like a perfect funnel in either direction in my opinion (hope). I don't know what else I could do to get this cat!

Gang set that spot! Make it a mine field, lol. Good luck man! Been getting up every morning running my line hoping you get one! Can’t wait to see the pics...it’ll happen. I laughed when I saw he had 25 sets on eighty acres and mine field is exactly what came to mind. I wouldn't want to walk through there. You have to admire his enthusiasm...we're all rooting for you.
