I don't trap anymore, but I am curious. Has anyone tried mixing one drop of pure catnip oil (that contains nepetalactone) in a pint or so of bobcat urine then using it as if it were normal urine? My question is whether it would be effective or be a waste.

Urine makes cats sniff and sometimes spray. Some cats like to rub and roll on cat nip. What is your thinking on why they would be good mixed together?

Old time government trappers relied heavily on catnip. It's not much used anymore, except possibly as a lure ingredient. Artificial catnip of course lacks the chemical that excites cats. I am aware of Asa's caution that real catnip repels some cats. Real catnip oil containing nepetalactone is very expensive, though I do have a little. Where I trapped cats were so widely scattered that I was that I was never able to tell if catnip helped. A few years ago I paid about $40 for 5ml. There are many drops in 5ml. Bobcat urine is commonly used for coyote as well as bobcats. I just wondered if there was a way to make urine more effective without spending much money or spending more time making sets.

Testing would be easy some place there were a lot of cats, low value cats, such as southeastern states.

Trying to extend a small amount of an active in some cases may be helpful and effective or a waste of material. Other such ingredients added to a larger volume may get drowned out in the effort by the base material. Only experimenting can tell you the results over time.

Also depending upon whether the active is in a water, oil or alcohol soluble base makes a big difference in its long term holding capacity as well if it will be held at all in a chosen base.
The understanding of some chemistry considerations are very valuable at times..

I guess what I really had in mind was tweaking coyote sets to take a few more bobcats. Many bobcats are taken in coyote sets. If the coyote sets could easily be made a percentage point or two more attractive to cats without degrading them for coyote that would be a worthwhile improvement. Most predator trappers make more coyote than cat sets.
