Hey guys, those Newhouse traps I found on the tree a couple weeks ago had these snares tied on them for fastening them to a tree. Does anyone know what kind of snare lock they are and what the piece is on the end. Is it some sort of tree lock? Here's some pics. [Linked Image]

The snare loc, I have seen those before I just can't remember where. The bottom one is a fastner, you go around the tree, form a loop, put it through the slot and over the tooth and cinch down. Pretty cool find JR!

I have no earthly idea how to answer your question bud, but what a cool find!

Imagine for a moment if you will, how many old NH traps are hanging in trees all over Alaska?!!! Boogles the mind ( in my case, that doesn't take much!)

Pete

I think that might be a Newhouse snare. Made by Animal Trap Company. I’ve got some (new in the box) in my trap shed. Will double check the next time I am over there.

I think you might be right. It seems like possibly in the 70s Newhouse, or actually Animal Trap Company of America was making some Thompson knockoffs.

Thanks guys. I asked Masek about them last night and he'd never saw them. You're right Pete, the amount of old Newhouse still hanging in the woods in defiantly mind blowing. I've been lucky enough to find a little over half a dozen Newhouse over the years on my line. Pretty cool finds to put in the collection and knowing a little about the history all the way back to the 20's makes it even better. Our environment is really easy on iron up here so unless they are laying on the ground, they are in great shape for the age. Kinda like Pete and White17.

You could always try researching that pat. number. I can't make it out or I would try.

Definitely a cool find. Buddy of mine many years ago swung off his horse and stepped on something hard in the moss. The hard spot turned into a 6 Newhouse. It is in great shape for being on the ground for awhile.
