I made a coon set in mud in front of a big culvert one time. Wired off a corn cob to the bottom of a bush and put anise on it. Caught a bobcat. Some cats like anise. Good fish oil I think they all like.

Fish oil can be a universal attractor for most all fur bearers. Just keep in mind odor, visual support of an odor or not still creates curiosity and interest. Familiar or unfamiliar odors create interest as well. So nothing surprises me anymore as to what interests an animal.

I have caught a lot of coyotes in the winter on fruit paste baits. Who would rationalize that to be the case but you cannot deny catch facts. I was targeting fox working near farm houses and out buildings to reduce domestic cat catches. Not targeting coyotes in those situations.

Then started using it at other locations more remote away from structures. Same result in coyotes interest. If using 2-4 sets at a location 1 or two sets have fruity type of bait or lures. Just some food for thought.

Good post Bob. I agree.
Caught a lot of coyotes here on "coon" lured sets. Coyotes like fish here, but also got quite a few at sets with just a loud sweet coon lure.
I've seen tracks in snow where they come right up to dogproofs and even lick on the traps.
In late season when the creeks freeze solid I go back and bed coyote traps at my old coon and rat pocket sets. Coyotes travel the frozen creek beds like sidewalks here and they really dig at the old pockets sets for fish and coon lure smells still coming from those holes. I started setting them and have had a nice run of success on coyotes that way.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Those froze creeks get used by cats too. Especially right after they freeze. I suspect its a very effective hunting tactic. In a shallow narrow waterway you can hang a few snares before it freezes.
.
jabNE I have had coyotes dig up a pocket set from up on the bank, never getting on the trap down in the water. When it is still an active coon set. Coons will do that too once in a while but usually its a coyote.
