Has anyone ever try a tire set? What I mean by this is leave a vehicle tire out and about for awhile, come back once they are kinda use to it, maybe a mouse or pack rat made it home then make a set out of it. either a trap inside the tire in the middle or outside somewhere around it. Can also make the tire into a drag. But put the normal bait & lure in or around it. Just a thought. I have many tires of different sizes and see chipmunks and house cats around them all the time.
Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere. Or so I've been told.

I tried some last year, and i never had any luck with them. Coyotes came into them about 10 feet away and circled and left.
Let me sugar coat this

I caught a coon In the one tire set I made. Then this year I ha done out and I had the trap sprung once and the next time I came the farmer had moved the tire to the edge of the field and plowed up my trap. I still have no Idea why they plowed up that bean field.

Neat. That is the first picture I have seen of one, with a catch.Do you put them out ahead of time,Posco? Nope, I put the tire out at the same time I placed the set. I liked the idea as soon as I heard of it and tried it for the first time this year. I made two other catches in it before the coyote came along. Two non-targets.

I saw a demo of it last fall at Minktoberfest. Major Bodicker put it on. It looked pretty easy. He dumped dirt in the center then bedded and covered his trap in that dirt.
Just passin through

I figured you could screw a peace of plywood to the bottom of the tire fill it with dirt bed and anchor the trap and bait and lure the tire and load up about 10 of them In the back of the truck and have your buddy push them out as you drive along. Kind of like dropping depth charges. LOL

I can't image spending that much time making a set. That said, I did one time place a trap in an old tire I found in the woods; caught one fox, nothing more. It didn't take long. The only added work was getting the tire into position and that was just off the edge of a field. Other than that, same as most any other set. Beav's idea might be a little more labor intensive but he is on to something. Having a guy hanging off the tailgate dropping scent-free sets as you go ain't a bad idea.

I made a 2 dirt hole set with the holes as eyes, trap as the nose, a put sticks in the shape of a smile...and caught a coyote, lol. The manager saw the set riding around because I had a turkey feather tied above it blowing in the breeze and called me laughing. He was also the one laughing at the coyote when I caught it.

With snow on the ground place a tire about 10 feet or so out In the field I bet you would be surprised how many critters will check It out.
