So I got into it with the family tonight at the Super-Bowl at my parents.. Really sucks and feel horrible the way things happened. So could use some preyer to Help mend the family. Basically my wife and I are the only conservatives in our entire family. 3 sisters and 1 brother. All were together because my grandpa passed away and his funeral was on Saturday. We are a close family besides this latest presidential election. So anyhow we got into a argument about trump and the electoral college being important to rural communities. Well I was inappropriate and said they were all retarded if they couldn’t see through the main stream media and believed What they saw on it and threw my cup/ ice cubes on the ground and told my wife we were leaving. As I turned to leave my Brother tries to run up and punch me. I turned quick and he missed and fell over me and I was over the top of him I didn’t punch him back and glad I didn’t but in mean time everyone grabbed me as if I was the Aggressor and held me back. Well then I got (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) and wrestled myself free said a couple choice words and left. Being we were so close before this it just feels awkward. Not sure how to move forward. Rant over

And that is why politics aren't discussed in polite company. It ends up emotional and we are then guilty of what we call others out for. The solution is simple if you and your brother can move beyond your pride. Often a simple "I'm sorry" is enough.

Was there a good amount of alcohol involved...?
Tell them you still love them, that you were wrong to let the emotions get out of control, although your bro trying to give you a haymaker didn't de-esclate things, and that you just won't talk politics with them. There's not a lot of undecided people nowadays, worldviews are typically firmly established and neither side is going to chance the others minds.
P.S. Are they going to vote for Bernie in the dem primary...?

Sleep on it... Pray about it with your Wife. 2 or. More are gathered....
If and when you talk. To them - stay Calm . No one wins in a family fight.
X2 Sorry that happened and for your loss. I'll be praying for you guys and that forgiveness can occur quickly. Emotions age raw right now as your family deals with the loss.

I have two sisters that are hard core Dems. Not really leftist, but Dems all the same. A few weeks ago while at a family get together one of them kept egging for a fight. Knowing I would be the one that spoke up. I finally did, I simply told everyone there I would not talk politics with them, any of them. Two things I have learned, politics and religion can destroy friendships and families.
It worked well, we just forgot about it and had a great time.
If your family is close, give it a little time and let it settle. Maybe make the first move to patch things up. if they don't wanna listen, well, maybe you were as close as you thought.

If you're putting politics ahead of love of family, you might want to recheck your priorities
Intolerance of other opinions is always ugly, but especially when it tears apart families.
If you were the first one to blow up, you might want to be the first to apologize.
And pass a rule against talking politics. My family has one, though it's not strictly applied.

Look at how much you are going to save on birthdays and Christmas this year.
Every family has members that struggle. You can love them without enabling them.

It hurts watching ones family members going down the wrong path.Best thing you can do is pray for them and set a good example.

Politics and religion, good times, good times.......... Best advice I ever got from my old man. If you want to start a fight just bring up politics or religion......it's on man! Of course calling the family retarded didn't help the situation, calling them socialists doesn't either and I wouldn't advise calling them ungrateful civilian slobs either, just saying. (I wouldn't do something like that on Thanksgiving or anything, being RIGHT and all) I haven't spoken with my family in years, it's a shame actually, and too late now. My advice is to not let it divide you all, death does come and make it permanent...
Keep your boots dry and your powder too.
I remember when a fur check was reality.....now I'm just trapping for the love of it.
Best Regards,
JT

As for not talking about religion, that's a world view. How is one to share the gospel if they never discuss it? With politics you should stand for your principles but if you no the others in the party are on the opposite side, it may be wise to not discuss it.

Life is short. Why put up with, be around people that you have to walk on egg shells to be around. Does being related give some one the right to be a pain? I can't say it gives any of my relatives that right. I don't need the head ache.

I have some cousins that would vote for Genghis Khan if he came back from the dead and ran for office with a big D after his name. My sister voted to ban trapping in CO ( I think I have convinced her that was a real bad vote). We manage to all still remain close. We don't avoid any discussions either. You just have to accept that not everyone see's the world the way you do.
It used to be that R stood for supporting big business and D for wage earners. Was kinda like the chineese concept of yin and yang. Neither can exist without the other and a sort of balance was achieved. I don't know how we got so polarized.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
