I've been only using DP's and BG's for coon. I don't like the potential chewing problem caused by too much jaw space in most foothold's. However, I do see a use for a foothold of some type.
What are every ones thoughts on a #1 CS Double jaw?
Thanks.

Get a 1.5 double jaw. It is much more versatile than a #1 and no problems holding coon. I prefer the NO-BS 1.5.

IMO if you want less chewing and more holding power a good #11 is going to be hard to beat. The #1 coils will hold coons too but harder to bed solidly and coons are notorious for flipping traps, even in water sets. 1 1/2 DJ coils are what most big number coon trappers use around here.

I caught my thumb in a No B S double jaw 1.5. I almost never got out of it and man it smarted. If than thing can subdue my big self it won't have any trouble with coonzilla. I tell everybody I feel for anything that steps on one of them.

why post that? pretty deceiving to non-trappers. Any human can most certainly release themselves from a 1.5

That might be a great trap for your area 3. My favorite is the #11 DLS

That No.11 is one bull dog of a trap.

I have used #1 coils and they worked fine but the 1 1/2 is a little better.

What you would have more problems with chew is square jaw traps . Add a chew guard on them you will hold them. If it is round jaw like 1 1/2 coil they have less problem with chew out

I have caught a number of big boar raccoons in Jakes set for coyotes without much foot damage at all, in spite of the huge size of those jaws. They come with nearly indestructible rubber jaws. If there was a way to adapt offset 1 1/2 coil spring traps with similar rubber jaws, I'd do it.

Thanks for all your comments guys. I usually only set coon traps while going through areas setting for coyotes. Just plan on getting a dozen or so foot holds to compliment the DR 's and BG's I've been using. I'll keep my eyes on the trap shed.

Whichever trap you settle on, the incidence of chewing can be reduced by giving that 'coon something else to work on.

This was, IMO, a major shortcoming of the BMPs on raccoon. They insisted in testing just the trap, not the set. Big difference.

Incorporating a healthy size stick into your land set with a foothold trap for 'coon will divert its attention from the trap to the stick. Seeing progress in demolishing the stick, the 'coon will continue to work on that, and not the trap.

Of course this isn't 100% effective, but overall will reduce chewing.

As far as trap choices, MactheDiver has been collecting the best dryland foothold trap for years: the old Victor #1 1/2 double jaw. #11s would be a close second IMO.

This system will fix all your chewing problems. You can set any sized foot hold trap with no problems. Use a long chain On your trap and In close vicinity place a 160 BG box. When the coon gets caught It will just about 100% of the time crawl Into the box to hide. Dead coon no chewing.

Muskrat,
I have noticed that the new double jaw traps do NOT have the "double" jaw flush to the surface with the with the "standard" jaw. IMO, not a good design. Easy to make the jaws, less money involved in the manufacturing process. I'll keep the stick idea in mind.

Beav, I believe that would work, but all the coons I catch are along the coyote line. Just for the heck of it I may do a couple next fall to see how it works. Probably better than the tire set.

This may not set well with some but I never worried about a coon chewing on It's foot. The foot has no feeling otherwise It wouldn't be chewed on. The first double jawed traps were made for skunks. It still didn't stop the skunk from chewing but It left enough foot still In the trap to keep It from escaping.

That's what double jaws were meant to do. Have the coon or whatever still there when the trapper arrived.
P.S. I posted on Trap Talk earlier. I sold my last coons and coyotes from December that I forgot I had in a different freezer. Hunter from Grony said coon pricing is way down due to the fact they can't export into China due to the virus issue. They have a LOT of coon in storage.
And Beav, you said this before, but he told me when I asked that most of the coon and rats sold to country buyers and FHA end up at Groenwald.

Sleepy Creek #11 DLS is my go to trap for dry land coon. I have taken several bobcats, a couple coyotes, and a badger in them. They are well made and hold very good.

Find a way to use one trap that will do a fair job on all species. A #11 isn't that trap.
