Nice vid Jim.
Bring a marten to the Cochrane workshop and I'll show you the knee out method of skinning.Works great on marten fisher fox and lynx.
Save you some un-neccessary knife work around the ankle, and vent.

I think I found something I might actually be competitive at.

Excellent video Jim. I always skinned and boarded my marten like you do, even the dog brush. The only difference is that I used wire screen to spread the tail and I pinned the hind legs around the board edge.

Good video, always interesting to watch others on how they put up their fur. I noticed you process Marten front legs by "pinning them flat" on small panels so I have a few questions.. Do you receive a better grade/more $ using this method ? Process the legs this way create useable fur to the furrier?

I am self taught more or less so it may not be the best way.. I cut around the wrist and snip the paw off, pull leg through when it is ready to do so, trim the length a bit and move on. I get decent grades usually with this method but could be getting a slight down grade and not even be aware of it.. I am always want to improve if I can. Thanks.

Everyone has their own techniques that probably don't result in a nickel more or less in revenue received for each skin. I don't tack out my front Marten legs, I leave them tucked inside. I feel that them flopping around on the outside may result in tears while in a tumbler.

I never understood pinning out the front legs. You cant see them once the pelt is turned and they dry just fine without pinning. Nothing wrong with doing it but I dont think its necessary, and it certainly takes more time.

I dont think they leave them out.....I think they tuck them inside as well ? I could be wrong though. I've never seen it done that way though. You are right though, overall the different techniques dont make a big difference in final price as long as the fur handling isn't horrible. For me, speed saves me more money than anything especially early in the season when there isn't much daylight and I'm running lots of miles.

Well done video, Gibb.
I have never boarded a Marten without a belly board. Is it common to not use a belly board?

I find it's easier and quicker to rip the pelt of the foot than it is to cut around the leg/ankle.

I only use wedges on otter and fisher, plus I feed them down from the top. Making a fisher video next will show how I do it.
My boards are tapered so sliding off the pelt is no problem.

I see, Thanks.
I do otter the same way. I board medium Bobcats on solid boards. I use the belly board down through the mouth of the pelt on them as well.
