I would like to begin this post with a sincere apology to all the experienced professionals out there. I actually thought that because I killed a gopher in my yard I could become a professional trapper with relative ease.........it was the epitome of self-righteousness and for that I知 sorry.

Set four standard trapline mole traps last night for nothing this morning, Today I made 3 sets for gopher with gophinator, and 6 sets for mole with standard and large trapline mole. Dug about 20 holes for 6 mole sets. I知 tired. Even though I知 making giant holes, the mole tunnels are tiny and just below the surface with the grass roots blocking the small trapline mole trap so I have to enlarge the tunnel to get the trap in. I知 setting in my yard and neighbors yard for mole and in the city easement/ditch adjacent to the community for gopher. Gonna check all traps in the morning. I知 open to any advice, thanks.

PS: I need training on trapping Attwater gopher and Eastern Mole in the south. Anyone?

I've never trapped gopher, but lots with moles.

The first thing I look at when looking over a lawn for the first time is I try to find the feeding areas. These are the places where the tunnels look like spaghetti. They're all over the place without any pattern.

Between these areas are straighter tunnels that I call highways. The mole uses them to move from feeding area to feeding area.

I like to set on the highways.

If the tunnel is too small I stretch it out with my trowel or fingers. The back of my trowel seems perfectly sized for stretching the tunnels out. I use the traplines or no mols. The no moles work better in sandy soils. I place 1 facing each way as I don't know which direction the mole will come down the tunnel.

Thanks very much for that. I was able to do that with about half the mole sets for nada. Had 3 gopher for 3 sets.

You mention the grass roots... were they growing down into the tunnel? If so, that tunnel isnt being used. Fresh tunnels dont have roots hanging down in them.

With the trap line product mole trap make sure you are bedding them. It take time to learn how to spot the most active tunnel. Take your time setting the traps.

Thanks very much! EBL, the roots exposed I think were from me attempting to enlarge the hole but what you said makes perfect sense. BTW, my mom is from Batavia. Good advice Getting There.....will do. Opened the box of new DK 1痴 today and it talks about finding the tunnels below the feeding tunnels. I can稚 imagine that beast of a trap being effective on these tiny moles but what do I know. Anyone trap in the lower tunnels for mole with DK1 or any other trap for that matter? As always, thanks. I知 very fortunate to have your support.

I have had some success with Out of sites. They were the go to trap for many years for a lot of guys in the South. I still have a lot to learn with them.
I use NO-moles for sandy soil. I like duffus trap for real wet soil. But trap line products are my go to trap.

Trapline traps are harder to use in sandy soil. They need to be bedded as said above. Best way to describe the procedure is to grab the back of the trap and drive it down at an angle into the tunnel.

I like the no mols because there isnt a bottom of the trap. It doesn't need to be bedded.

Well, I followed your advice and trapped my first two moles! Thanks guys for your help. It felt really good to get the first one. It was in a long tunnel along top of a ditch at the edge of a residential yard. The second was in a spot I had already trapped for nothing but noticed new activity so set it and 10 minutes later the sand above the trap was cracked So I pulled it and had one live......very cool. Still digging a lot of holes and pulling lots of empty traps but but getting better.......EBL and GT, if you like to sport fish and either of you find yourself in south Texas, look me up for bay and surf fishing on me. Thanks again.

Excellent! Good job!

The wife hails from Houston. I used to go surf fishing in Galveston all the time. I used to have a blast with sand perch and speckled trout!

Congrats on your first mole! Yes, experience is the best teacher, and you're on your way. But, if you haven't already done so, it's important that you learn how to use the Search and Archive functions on this forum regarding gopher/mole trapping, traps, techniques, subspecies, habits, habitat, etc. There is a WEALTH of info to be had here! You'll learn quickly the differences and similarities found throughout the country and world in pursuit of these two critters.

I'm located between SA and CC off of I37. Be glad to help lead you astray in trapping the sandy soils of South Texas! PM me with your contact info if you're interested in discussing gopher or mole trapping in our neck of the woods.

Thanks gentlemen! Thanks for that Aggie, I have done some searching but not very good with the search tool, but thanks for that and I will definitely PM you about trapping in our area. Well, gonna go out and check yesterday痴 sets. Four gopher and 4/mole but two of the mole sets where in the same tunnel from which I took an animal. I had two gopher in the same tunnel, going to see if I have any recurring success with mole. Hope everyone has a great day.
