I have a question! What is the difference between vasoline and petro jell? I always thought vasoline was just a brand name for petroleum jelly.

How about pure lard? Smearable pretty much waterproof and something critters will lick on. Don’t know about the glaze/skim/seal characteristics.

Speaking of bobcat fat...

Just got in a couple of cat carcasses last week for bait. They were Pa. cats. A buddy does a lot of our boning of bobcat and beaver. He called and said the two cats had so much fat he was surprised as to what he was seeing. He said he separated as much of the fat as he could and put it into a separate bag for me. I wasn't quite sure if he was fooling with me or not when he dropped off the boned cat meat.

He had a bag of trimmed fat from those cats that I weighed in as I was curious as to how much it was. 3-1/2 pounds of pure suet. I have skinned hundreds of cats and never saw a cat with that much fat on them. I ground up that fat and put it into a gallon wide mouth bait jug to render it this summer. It was packed in pretty tight into that gallon jug and it was full.

Nature never ceases to amaze me. I have seen some big cats come from Pa and West Virginia over the years but didn't skin them all to see how much fat content they had stored on their bodies. Normally they don't carry that much in my experience. it tends to turn to lean muscle mass and not stored fat to that degree. A few ounces around the belly is normal.

wonder if that bobcat had been going up on somebody's porch at night and helping itself to some pet food full of rice or corn?

old woman that used to live across the street from me fed all kinds of stuff. had several skunks sleeping during the day on her back porch with a dozen or so feral cats. had coons coming right up to her, several fox every night along with deer. those fox never killed her cats so far as i could tell. never saw a bobcat over there though.
