Anyone ever tried to "match the hatch" so to speak? I'm setting cages for squirrels and started using freshly cracked walnuts, shells and all, in the back of the cages, in small containers. I normally use my go to bait I use on pretty much everything, which is molasses, anise and pelletized fish pellets. Set five cages on two different properties and had three squirrels this morning. Haven't tried acorns or hickory nut yet, but I plan to whenever I can pick some up. By the way, these were educated squirrels as well. The maintenance people tried to catch them and all the squirrels did was flip the cages and steal the food. Just wondering what some of you other guys use.

Want to watch this post. I have a squirrel dog I'm training.

We've been running pretty hard on squirrels the last couple of months. We generally use positive sets on their holes. The females are really trying to den up right now to give birth.

I ALWAYS run a long stake thru a cage to prevent roll overs, either by the catch or a varmint trying for a meal.

The squirrels were rolling the cages up in the attic where the maintenance people didn't try to cover or anchor them. I'm assuming I got the guilty squirrels as I haven't got a call back from the renters.

Have to say, matching the hatch definitely works. 100% success rate on squirrels using cracked walnuts. This area of town is loaded with walnut trees and the squirrels are eating them up.

Walnuts are not their favorite food, That's really the only food available this time of year.

They sure do seem to be zeroing into them regardless if its they're favorite of not. I've used peanut butter and peanuts still in the shell and they go for the walnuts. I have three 8X8 cages surrounding a walnut tree they're using to access the house. The one with the freshly cracked walnuts has scored 4 times within the last week. Not sure if it matters, but all 4 were males. The other cages haven't been touched. If I didn't think I had all of them already I would switch the other cages to walnuts. Not saying you're wrong BigBob, just saying what the squirrels are showing me.
