Do any of you who home tan use saw dust to brighten/shine up the fur after tanning? How do you do it?

I use cob grit but you can also use hardwood sawdust.
Use it as a media when tumbling.Add a little mineral spirits and water in equal portions to just barely dampen the media.Tumble for 20 minutes. The solvent/water loosens/cleans the fur and the cob grit removes it and polishes the hair.

Does it have to be hardwood? How about spruce? Media? Also I don't have a tumbler. Can I just put it is a tote and shake it?

Spruce will stick in the fur.
You can use a dryer to tumble smaller pelts beaver, otter fox etc,it wouldnt suffice for wolf or bears.
Double bag the fur and media, tie off and use the dryer with the heat turned off.
