Did you buy dried split peas? If you did arent they flavorless rather than say canned beans or frozen? Im only asking because I love split pea soup but I dont make it . Curious to know how to make good split pea or whole pea soup. Yes I used dried split peas. I think they had quite a bit of flavour. The soup tasted like peas lol.

I start off with a good smoked ham, boiled.I check the stock often while reducing, depending on the ham,it can get too salty, then if you have to dilute it it will not be as good. I also use the drippings from the ham,and the bone to make a stock from a roasted ham.I use dried yellow peas.

to blend or not to blend that is the question.
my dad made split pea soup when ever he was home sick from work , lots of bay , a fair amount of pepper but he ran it through the blender and I prefer un-blended.
I have always just used dried split peas , if I think about it I soak the peas over night. if not a good rinse and let them set for while I cut up the carrots , and onions.
almost always have ham hocks in the freezer but any time I can scavenge a ham bone from a family gathering I will.

No need to pre soak the peas. Add some chopped celery and onion to the pot of soup too!
Bring it all to a boil then turn the heat to low, scoop all the foam off the surface and let it simmer for about 2-2.5 hours. The peas will soften up in that time and even mush. The carrots will mostly dissolve.
5 cups of split peas 5 grated carrots 7 celery stalks 1 onion 4 bay leaves 1 tablespoon of salt 1 teaspoon of pepper Ham bone with some ham still on 12 cups of water
That’s the recipe I followed.

Just about what I do only I add whole baby carrots and at least 1 jalapeno I skip the salt and add crushed red pepper i like to buy one small boneless ham and just dice it and add it to the pot. I use a crook pot most of the time.

thx,,i got everything but celery but thats ok. Yup! Oh and give it a stir every now and then while it’s simmering. The split peas will start out sticking together in a clump, but they break apart as they heat up.
