How many of you catch more , get less refusals, with a yellow urine vs a brown urine in snow? I know our wolves in Alaska laugh at the brown urine. ..and are wary of it....as Pointed out in AK howler's video.
How and why does this matter to wolves? I've never seen yellow pee sold commercially, make's me wanna bring yellow food coloring out on the line.

Where do you get yellow pee? even cat pee taken from bladders gets darker with time. No clue about wolves, but coyote or fox is dark in a couple days when using a collection pen. Can wolves even see the color yellow? I don't know. Minnesota trap supply was selling yellow pee one year at our state trappers meet. Said it was pasteurized. When I asked about it they said it was done like milk to preserve it. Well milk is pasteurized by heating it. That kills bacteria but also ruins the milk. Nutrients have to be added back in and the taste is horrible.

It wont keep it sterile either as sour milk from being in the fridge to long has happened to everyone. So I didnt buy it. Im not certain those jugs even had urine in them as I don't believe its a bacteria that causes it to darken.

Who do you know that has wolves penned up for urine collection? I find it hard to believe that good coyote pee wont make a wolf stop and sniff. The trick is finding a supplier.

I have pasteurized urine in years past. I did that as I suspected the urine batch which I purchased was going to spoil and months later I checked a small sampling that I kept from the batch and it showed physical and odor signs of spoilage as I suspected. Good thing I did pasteurize it as it would have been a hard financial loss.
The odor was stable after that and the urine remained in good condition. It is a lot of work and you have some evaporation loss in the process as well.

The color was caramel as is most urine as it gets some age on it. It is near impossible to keep meat fed animal urine held at room temps at the pure natural excretion color of golden yellow. Freezing would be the only alternative. I don't have enough walk in cooler space to do that, nor do I believe it is practical or any better then stronger aged urine.

In some cases I would like to be able to keep the fresh deposited urine of a prime winter red fox that is found in the snow. Someone finds a way to get that stuff bottled has gold in a bottle for sure.

I get a good amount of cat pee from their bladders and also some fox but rarely from coyotes. Cats hold lots of pee after capture. I carry small zip ties to zip closed the anal excretion area after dispatch to save the urine or you will lose a lot of urine if not all of it from leaking until you get to skinning it.

I did catch one coyote this year that had I pretty full bladder but the large majority are empty. But the coyotes that are shot will have some sometimes.

I am guessing the yellow wolf urine that is being used is taken from where a wolf has already marked something in the snow and then you move it to the desired location. Wolves will check out and mark again where they have already on their next pass through. They will check out their own urine posts as well as others in the pack, but what really gets them is when you take urine from another pack and put it in their territory. I am guessing the yellow snow only stays yellow because of the cold temperatures we have. That said, I have had wolves checking out the brown coyote urine I have been using, but being a pack animal I think knowledge is passed quite quickly and after catching one the rest keep their distance. This is my experience anyway.

Thanks bfisch. Never been around wolves. That moving of yellow snow makes sense as well as wolves being able to recognize danger when a family member gets jammed up.

Most of those coyotes unload when stressed. I can see shooting some that were full of pee and it dies before it gets stressed enough to pee out. Quick dispatch will give you some pee at skinning time.

Thanks for the replies.
I should have simplified my question to ask ...why doesn't urine stay yellow and bottled that way?

Bfisch
Pee posts are gold, one can and will catch multiple wolves at the same pee post. I've yet to see a dog walk past a well watered mailbox post and not sniff and pee on it. Local, yellow neighborhood dog pee can work well.

I never worry to much about color, but it's dark color. Been getting mine from a fox ,coyote urine collector . Never had a problem and better yet the critters like it.
