What do you like and why? Size and weight? Bar length?

I have a 50cc Echo that I use pretty hard cutting firewood. On the heavy side for just occasional work though. Guys who are using a saw to cut poles, notch logs, clear trails etc. what do you like.

Im sure easy starting and reliability are a big factor.

I use Stihl. 460 for firewood. Old 046 for ice. 660 for milling. And a 290 in the sled for trail work. 20” bars on all and all bars and chains are interchangeable which makes it much easier.

I mostly use a Stihl 032. I has to be 35 years old. 20 inch bar. Uses the same fuel as the snogo so that is an added plus IMO.

For firewood around here, Nebraska, I mostly use my Stihl MS391 and MS250. When running trails on snow machine/four wheeler in Canada I like the Stihl 170 with 16" bar. I think the 180 weighs about the same and should have a little more jam but I've never used one. When I go with only one saw I like to have an extra bar and chain along. If bar on saw gets pinched, just take power head off and install new bar to cut out stuck one. I also like to have a wedge along for trails with lots of larger trees across them, saves a lot of pinching.

I use a Stihl 660 or a 391 for cutting firewood. Used a Husky 385 for a few years, good saw but heavier than a Stihl 660 without quite the oomph when you sink the dogs to real wood. Have carried various saws on fourwheeler and snowmachine over the years, including a small Homelite that didn't like starting in cold weather. My favorite was a Stihl 180 with 16" bar but I siezed it up a year or two ago and have been carrying a Husky 51 that I had around with a 20" bar. Longer bar is nice when cutting bigger blowdowns but it not as convenient to carry and the power head is both longer and quite a bit heavier. Had a Stihl 009 that came with a 14" bar and I put a 16" on when I managed to run into a tree with it on the front of my fourwheeler and break the original bar. Tiny little saw that was great to carry and always started easily until the day it never started again. Underpowered for cutting big blowdowns though. I always carry an axe for backup or quick lopping of little 3-4" stuff. All I carried for quite a few years on a snowmachine was a cruisers axe, but I used one all day for years working as a surveyor and was very comfortable with one and kept one blade sharp enough to shave with and the other one wasn't sharpened as often and was used for chopping frozen knots and the last few whacks through a log laying on the ground so I didn't dull the sharp blade. Getting older and lazier now, I like a saw as long as it runs reliably.

Tip: some saws tend to get moisture in the recoil start and freeze up and not engage. Kick the snow down and stick them under the exhaust of an idling snowmachine for a minute or so to unthaw them.

Bought a battery powered Stihl to carry in the truck or sled when trapping. Works great when this happens and some years I'll cut dozens.

That’s a mess. Now I see why a lot of the guys up north carry bigger saws.

I'm In a mild climate in southern Indiana yet have been glad to have my saws in my truck more than once. Not often but spring storms bring down trees and block the roads. It's nice to be able to remove it and be on my way. Also makes me feel good that the teens over driving their head lights on the hilly curvy roads wont end up wrapped up in the tree once its removed.

I have had several saws over the years but currently my favorite is a stihl 361 that has been ported, honed, had the exhaust opened up and turned to run on aviation fuel mixed at 32 To 1. I also have an echo 2511t for a small trim saw. It recieved the same mods. It's still under powered but it is only 4 lb. I have others but these are my primary goto saws.
