A guy called me and wants me to trap his property but he wants to burn it off first. Then the day after he gets through burning he wants me to trap . Has anybody had any experience with this? I’m thinking that all the animals will leave for a while and I won’t be catching very much what are your thoughts ?

I have done it several times. What I found was coyotes poured in to the burned area feeding on what ever didn't live through the burn. Worked for me in my area

YES!! I’m waiting on firebreaks and burning to start before I start setting the plantation. I’ll set on burns, especially where burn meets unburned or semi burned thick areas. Burns attract everything from quail to coyotes.

I don't know about coyotes but deer love a freshly burned clear cut.

I have conducted springtime controlled burns on thousands of acres of CRP here in farm country (5 GUYS AND A SHOVEL we called ourselves). Don't have any ideas about your timber burns in the south but here's my take. The avian predators (hawks and eagles) will show up shortly after the burn to feed on the small prey animals killed in the fire. Many many times we run coyotes out of the back and head fires and they are in poor shape as they leave at the very last minute. They have eaten smoke and heat and have run as close as 20 ft. from a crew member to escape the flames. Like I said they are the locals who (I assume) were setting up housekeeping in that field(s) as there are usually 2 that come out (April burns here). I was the burn chief on all of them so I monitored the burn and weekly inspections of the grass regrowth. I saw no sign of coyotes working those areas (we even had snow AFTER several burns) in search of carrion or dead prey species. These were small burns of 100-300 acres with adjoining corn and soybean fields as escape avenues so we had good visibility of the surroundings. After the grass greened up (approx. 2-3 weeks) deer started using it and a few (not a lot) of rabbits began to recolonize them. It was a tough go for every prey animal that could not fly out or find a hole to escape in. If done in early April (even March) and we had warm wet weather we had ground nesting birds back by May trying to pull off a clutch as it was lush green some years --- other years not so much. Here I would say they are not good for checking for sign to do some ADC trapping for at least 4-8 weeks. Your timber burns may be just the opposite with all the adjoining cover areas.. ........... the mike

I’ve even seen snakes leave cover to head into burns. Watched 2 Cottonmouths cross the firebreak I was monitoring.
I would imagine field/CRP burning would leave the entire area completely bare. I could see where no predators other than aerial would patrol the area.
Most burns down here are staggered. One section is burned and the section next to it is left unburned. Gives the prey somewhere to hide during the burn. As soon as the fire clears that area they are right back in it. Sets along these burns produce for us. I noticed he was from GA and figured we had similar areas and critters. [Linked Image]

Never have trapped right after a fire , but a couples of months letter i trapped along the fire line they build to control the fire (was wild fire) and had the best year ever on red fox and bobcats. Coyotes seem to hold back away had to set different for them. Use hair patches with bait on them sthing them a lil' with a lighter. They were killer.

Let me sugar coat this

I was trapping a landowners place 2 years ago. Several days after I had setup the property the forester came in and burn several sections. What I did noctice was a few days after the burn was I could really notice a lot of game trails that I hadn’t nocticed before. Really taught me a lot about how animals move through an area
