So after trying waxing my traps for the first time, I have decided it's too messy, expensive and a hassle. I understand it helps with scent control and weather protection too but I'd rather only dye my traps and scent control isn't a big concern for me. I was thinking of dying my traps again next year and just lubricating them with vegetable oil. I figured the vegetable smell wouldn't turn away most of the critters, may even help with things like rabbit and groundhog. Anyone else lubricated their traps in a similar way. Thanks!

Wax has nothing to do with scent control. Wax holds odor.

If you don't want to mess with wax, full metal jacket is a long lasting coating that you only have to redo every few years for most traps.

Vegetable oil does turn rancid when exposed to oxygen after a while.

For temporary lubrication, I use silicon spray.

Why would you lubricate your traps? Either just dye and set or dye and wax.
On brand new traps I’ll rinse off the grease with Dawn detergent in a big tote and then set them.
I’ll soak them in vinegar and water if they get too rusty then dye and wax. I sorta enjoy the whole process. Wax just seems to make them a little more bulletproof in my opinion, plus they seem a little quicker.

Traps don’t need lubrications! The fact that wax seems to speed them up a bit as well as protect them from the elements is an added benefit. Any decent trap should last you and your grandkids a lifetime as long as they get a little protection. Dye and wax , paint or dip in one of several trap coatings but protect them , don’t worry about the lubricant.
