I read on here about spray painting cable a beige or light brn color, wouldn't this leave an odor to spook critters? Also would bow string wax be useful on cable; keep locks from freezing, maybe a littler quicker?

do a latex paint dip like formula 1 dip or spray paint with aerosol cans just allow enough time for them to dry well and air out. I pack snares in a packer of dirt and peat moss to help cleanse any odors as is reasonable.

Doing them late in the year is probably not a good idea if considering some sort of painting. I have done it in years past when I just didn't get to them soon enough. Depends on the weather and if there is snow cover or not as to if they are more prone to refusals. it helps to understand the type of cover you are setting in as to how easily they may be seen and they walk around them at times.

I take my CRs and coil them up and lay them out on a large piece of card board. Then I spray with 2 different colors. When dry I turn them over and repeat the process.
I think It's better to do It this way since it gives you a camouflaged effect other then a solid color when you dip.

Thanks all! I did have a couple refusals on 4 whlr tracks, where fox came right up to snare, stopped and hopped over to other track and continued on. Setting mostly in golden rod, switch grass, brush lines between fields. After I stood back and looked at refusals I could see they stood out pretty good. I do try to cover them with weeds and available material but with wind, rain, and snow all season some didn't stay camo'd to well. Will be painting in the off season here. Thanks again!

Some times a critter will do that no matter what your snare looks like. And some times to much guiding and cover Is also a No No.

x2 if they are harder for me to see stands to reason they would be harder for animals see too. I use Formula 1 like Newt says some of the time and I have used camo spray paint (VERY LIGHT DUSTING). and have had great success with both. Its not about how many you catch but about how many you don't catch. I like to try to tip the odds in my favor when I can.

Two diff sprays here, too. I buy a can of flat camo tan and a flat camo black or dark brown. Hit the all with the light tan color first, lightly, then a couple stripes of the dark color and that really breaks up the pattern.
I do this with my cages and boxes too, also some of my DPs and 110s, 170s.
Jim

My snares are all in the shed but here are a few pics of the 160s, cages, and 110s. You get the idea anyway. Start with the light color base, then when dry do a couple quick swipes with the dark color to create shadows and break up the pattern. In low light they virtually disappear.

Here is a 160 cabled to a blue valley support/stake. The cable really darkened up nicely.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I think painting does a couple things. It cuts the glare of the cable which may stand out on a night with a moon. Depending on color, it seems to help blend the cable with surrounding grass and brush. It may also extend the life of the cable if you boil in water and baking soda as many have suggested to cut the sheen and remove the factory oil.

I’m just starting to snare and use Formula One.

I have spray painted multi colors like beige and black with a very light coat and let them hang outside for months in the woods by the house and only grab some when I am ready to hang them.
