I want to make some drowning rods. I have 3 pieces of 1/2" x 10' rebar, nuts and large washers for the stops and stake holes. Can single stake swivels be used for the locks or do I need to make some out of square tubing?

You can make them out of tubing or just buy premades. Wouldnt trust stake swivels to lock up.

There are so many ways to make drowning locks for rebar drowners out of whatever scraps you have laying around if you have a welder if not drill a hole in a piece of square tube or pipe or conduit cut it at an angle on the end. Just try it and see if it locks up or slides right back up it. If you have a welder a lock washer that fits over the rebar or even a big nut with a short piece of flat or round steel coming off it with a little nut on the other end to attach to... just use your imagination.

Thanks, I was just curious since they're shaped like the washer locks. I know I've got something that will work (I have a hard time throwing metal away).

If I could see your scrap pile I could be more help. lol Even a short section of angle iron with a big hole on one side and a small hole on the other side should slide one way and lock going the other way.

^^^^^^ this ^^^^^^ the angle iron is the easiest way I know of on rebar or smooth rod !

If you do not weld, this one can be made with a hacksaw, drill and dremel tool.

[Linked Image]

1" outside diameter black pipe cut at 90 degrees on one end, 45 degrees on the other with a hole drilled for a J hook and an angle cut out to make the lock. Small footprint is not likely to snag on something and locks solid.

I've made a few of these and really like them. Easy to make and they work great on any rod.

Nice lock. I'm pretty sure I have some pieces of 3/4" & 1" conduit if that would be a suitable sub for the black iron pipe.

I saw a pic of the Hagz multi-purpose lock and they looked similar to what ADC was describing. I think any one of the three would be pretty easy to cut out.

Finally got a few of the locks QuietButDeadly suggested made and they worked great. I've caught 2 "large" (27 lbs & 38 lbs) beavers and think there's probably two more that I haven't been able to catch though, but that's for another post.I

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions
