My daughter and I are planning a trip to Cooperstown in mid May and I thought as long as we were that far I would like to visit Maine also. Any suggestions on sites to see, places to eat, things to do? I have been down South and out West quite often, but never to the East coast. We only have 8 days so this will be a tourist trip, although I wouldnt mind getting in some trout fishing if available.
Thanks in advance
Db

You can’t go wrong visiting Acadia National Park.

Kittery , Maine has a nice outlet area with the Kittery Trading post. Great store , right over the line from NH.

Also , NH has some very affordable liquor stores right off I95 heading into Maine. Run by the state of NH , almost duty free shop prices , NH has no sales tax.

Unless you're interested in going to the Maine Coast you can see a lot of beautiful country within an 8 hour drive of Cooperstown. The Adirondacks, Green Mountains and White Mountains are all relatively close by and they all have good trout water.

I have been vacationing in BoothBay Harbor for over 40 years. never get tired of it. Also enjoy day and overnight trips out to Monhegan Island. Monhegan Island is the land that time forgot! No cars allowed there. Very peaceful!

If you are a history buff:

Fort Niagara (and Niagara Falls)
Johnson Hall State Historic Site
Saratoga Battlefield
Crown Point
Fort Ticonderoga
Fort William George
Fort at Number Four (Charleston NH)

Not of historic interest but a drive through the White Mtns of NH is spectacular (Franconia Notch, Crawford Notch, Pinkham Notch).

As others said, Kittery Trading Post if you are going thru Kittery Maine.

The coast of southern Maine is very interesting as is Baxter State Park (Mt Katahdin) and Arcadia State Park. The rest of Maine is mostly pine trees and potato farms, not that there is anything wrong with that.

The Maine coast is great, but you need to get off of Rt.1 and take the side roads down to the little fishing villages to see the real Maine. Kittery Trading Post is nice. Bob's clam shack next door if you like seafood. Moving up Rt.1 the Maine Diner has great food. Kennebunkport to see the Bush family compound. .Boothbay Harbor is nice, as is the Pemaquid point light house. Acadia National Park is a must.Take the coastal route. Leaving there take RT.2 across Maine, New Hampshire and into Vermont for scenery.Vermont is beautiful. If you like history, New York has Fort Ticonderoga, Fort William Henry, Lake George, and Saratoga battlefield. As for fishing take a charter on Lake Ontario., fabulous fishing.

If you decide to travel through northern NH, Pinestead Farm Lodge just south of Franconia Village is a great place to stay. You can find them on Airbnb.
