Just finished up working a bunch of tails for tanning. I chunked up the trimmings, bone and scrapings for some oil. Just been working about 4 days now.

On and off the stove will work out the oil pretty quick. Just have to keep an eye on it so it doesn't get too hot. No there is no odor that I can smell or the wife. She can't walk so she isn't far from the stove all day long sitting in her chair.

No meat or skin in the batch. Gotta keep the lid loose a 1/2 turn or so.

That's working fast. Good idea on the heat.

I did that with tails that had no leather and got a light colored oil , in my opinion the consistency and smell was the same .

I did that. The coyotes liked it straight here. I added some other ingredients and they liked that too.

Just passin through

Curious Bob ... I have about a dozen or so tails that i did not have to turn in for bounty(normally they need to be turned in to the highways dept for proof so no care to preserve them was taken) that sat in the back of the truck and developed maggots. I kept them and put them in my bait freezer. If i thaw them and filet the leather off would they be suitable for making BTO or should i just stick with fresh tails ?

Guess I need to try another batch. Had a jar of beaver tail chunks and a jar of mullet in a milk crate sitting in one of my fields. Forgot about them when the river got up, they gone!

I may find them later but I doubt it

Fat tissue isn't a good food source for maggots. They will work on the attached tissue and scaly skin. I had some tails that had been in the freezer for a few years or more that I skinned out with the fresh tails. Cut them all up in smaller chunks and they all are working out with oil daily on and off the wood stove.

I would skin them out by fileting the skin off as you say and rinse them clean. Let them dry well and chunk them up. The smaller the pieces the faster they will begin to break down.

Dumb question from first timer. I’m not interested in tanning the tails, only wish to make oil. Any difference in skinning the tail off or just chunking whole?

You get a much faster oil release without any skin and hardly any fly problems since there isn't much tissue to rot and to develop odor that draws the flies,

Thanks Bob, i'm gonna give it a whirl when it starts to get a bit warmer here.

Beaver tail oil is working out nicely. I have enough to work with now. Drain it off and set it back to a slow simmer once again. It keeps on giving..........
Here is a before at the start 4 days in then a week later. No odor at all. Of course I don't smell anything. Just some food for thought for those that are curious and have the interest smile

The cleaner the material the lighter the color of oil. Tissue and skin adds color in the breakdown process.

Bob- I am doing the same thing! Any tips on how you're tanning the tails? I was going to use that stuff in the orange bottle.

That will work fine. Most methods work as long as you have good clean surfaces. Break the leather well and you should be good.

First draw of beaver tail oil. 18 oz. on the first run. Should get about the same draw in a week or so. Warming up here so don't burn the stove as much now.

Oil rendered before draw.

Bob the batch I’m making now will be mixed with some anise and a little grey fox gland . This will be used next year as a lure for my dog proofs .
Would you care to share how yours will be used ? Not looking for trade secrets, just curious if you are using it strait or mixing for something else .

I had been using it in pipes with good results. Tony bragged on the old leftover chunks enough that I tried them this year on a very limited basis as I didn’t hardly put any coyote sets out this year. From what I saw I will be using a lot more of them next year.

Great post Bob. I'm a novice and have never tried but plan to give a whirl. What do you use to strain the oil, cheesecloth or something similar, or do you get it out with a baster. I'd think some type of straining would be better to get pure oil without any sediment in it. Thanks Bob
