3togo,I use winter grade oil ,year round , it is thinner and you use more of it. Like to have my oil tank almost empty , when my fuel runs out.. . I think you pay several dollars a jug, for the name brands. I also use chain oil to lube bearings, pto shafts, any wear surfaces. Try a jug of the cheaper oil, works for me. old243

I buy bulk from my local saw shop in 10 and 30 weight but have used
Stihl Mystic poulan echo country line
they all work and all should be fine in 30 weigh/summer this time of year mostly above freezing
there are many ways to skin a cat , or lube a bar some run less thick others run more thin , they may look thicker or thinner but have a different tackifier in them. some think fling is good others thing fling is bad
as long as you run it and it is getting through your oiler you should be good

I like seeing oil fling off the tip of the bar. That tells you it is getting lubed well.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I like a little fling also when I hold the tip of the bar near the end of a round I want to see a touch of spray when I rev the saw a bit.
a good habit to get in is to rev the saw a few seconds after coming out of cut before shutting off the saw it helps get oil on the bar before you shut it down.
when your pulling out of your felling cut to step away just shut it down and move , obviously

Make sure that auto lube hole is clear on the self oiling bars or it won’t matter what oil you are using the oil can’t get to the chain.

My local shop told me they love to see people using motor oil because it helps their sales on new bars. He says it's way too thin.
Trash your goals and plans for life. Just wing it and you'll never be let down!

It is really not that critical what oily use. Some folks use corn oil. The stuff is only on there for a couple of laps of the chain before being thrown into the shrubbery. The main thing is that there is always fresh stuff coming out of the tank to replace what's being kicked off. The thicker stuff stays on a little longer but that is not necessarily a good thing. More so when cutting dirty wood as it then also keeps the grit and sand particles longer on the chain with it. I for one rather have that dirt flushed away from the bar and chain with a less sticky oil. Instead of it staying on like a lapping compound causing wear.

If you really want to smell bad, add some gear lube to the used motor oil. Need an additive that repels ticks. I cut in a swamp yesterday. Today ALL chains need to see the grinder. Dirt IS the enemy.
