For 30+ years my brother and myself have always used Husqvarna bar lube. Warm weather and cold weather types. Currently the local Farm & Fleet does not have any in stock. They do have Oregon bar lube on sale, but it is much thinner in the jug when you pick it up and shake it. They also have Echo brand, not on sale, seems about the same thickness in the jug.
Does anyone have experience using either brand? I'm concerned about it flinging off the bar and not providing enough lubrication. I also have a Stihl dealer in town and could by a gallon from them (much thicker) and mix 50/50 with the Oregon brand.
I know a lot of you guys cut wood, how about opinions, everybody has one.

3togo,I use winter grade oil ,year round , it is thinner and you use more of it. Like to have my oil tank almost empty , when my fuel runs out.. . I think you pay several dollars a jug, for the name brands. I also use chain oil to lube bearings, pto shafts, any wear surfaces. Try a jug of the cheaper oil, works for me. old243

I buy bulk from my local saw shop in 10 and 30 weight but have used

Stihl
Mystic
poulan
echo
country line

they all work and all should be fine in 30 weigh/summer this time of year mostly above freezing

there are many ways to skin a cat , or lube a bar some run less thick others run more thin , they may look thicker or thinner but have a different tackifier in them.
some think fling is good others thing fling is bad

as long as you run it and it is getting through your oiler you should be good

I like seeing oil fling off the tip of the bar. That tells you it is getting lubed well.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I like a little fling also when I hold the tip of the bar near the end of a round I want to see a touch of spray when I rev the saw a bit.

a good habit to get in is to rev the saw a few seconds after coming out of cut before shutting off the saw it helps get oil on the bar before you shut it down.

when your pulling out of your felling cut to step away just shut it down and move , obviously

I really don't believe it is that critical. I have run mostly used motor oil in my saws for over 30 years. Save it when changing the oil in the family vehicles and company trucks. I have never noticed any undue wear on anything. That is with some years of cutting 50-60 cords of live oak. I have even run diesel a time or two when I forgot to fill my oil can. It's a little smelly, but works fine. And one or two tanks of that really cleans up the bar and chain!

Has-Been, we used to run used oil but we now believe the bar lube is better. Both of use used to cut 15-17 cords of firewood each year, and for a few years did contract logging for smaller landowners that the timber companies wouldn't quote. We used to buy the Husky brand lube by the case from a logging supply business or at the Boonville, NY Woodsmen field days. Always had better pricing there than at any other time

Thanks Run. Closet Rural King to me is about 45 minutes one way. I'll think about it.

I have ran about everything from used motor oil to countless brands of bar oil. I have learned it will all work, but I want a bar oil with high tack( very sticky). I want it sticking to the bar lubricating it not flinging off the end. I found a saw shop about an hour and a half away and after years of running saws both commercially and personally I found out I could benefit from education. Lol.

I also had my saws ported, cylinders honed, exhaust opened up, turned to run on aviation fuel at 32:1 ect...

More power ,better lubricated, and runs cooler but louder. The shelf life on aviation fuel is 5 years and wont go bad and clog up your carburetors if your 2 strokes sit for a long time. It dose cost more and requires a trip to the air port so not as convenient.

When I use to fell timer for a living, we only used Stihl bar oil and 2 stroke oil in our saws. On my farm, I still use the stihl or Husqvarna 2 stroke oil, but the bar oil I get from Rural King in the 1 or 2 gal jugs. I believe Cam2 is the name or something like that. Several of the guys at the local saw mill used it and told me about it that is why I switched. Its cheaper too especially when you run through .5-1gal/day.

Make sure that auto lube hole is clear on the self oiling bars or it won’t matter what oil you are using the oil can’t get to the chain.

My local shop told me they love to see people using motor oil because it helps their sales on new bars. He says it's way too thin.

Trash your goals and plans for life. Just wing it and you'll never be let down!

It is really not that critical what oily use. Some folks use corn oil. The stuff is only on there for a couple of laps of the chain before being thrown into the shrubbery. The main thing is that there is always fresh stuff coming out of the tank to replace what's being kicked off. The thicker stuff stays on a little longer but that is not necessarily a good thing. More so when cutting dirty wood as it then also keeps the grit and sand particles longer on the chain with it. I for one rather have that dirt flushed away from the bar and chain with a less sticky oil. Instead of it staying on like a lapping compound causing wear.

Let's go Brandon

If you really want to smell bad, add some gear lube to the used motor oil.
Need an additive that repels ticks.
I cut in a swamp yesterday. Today ALL chains need to see the grinder.
Dirt IS the enemy.
