I have always just used thick and sticky Stihl bar oil. I have cut with people using motor oil and thinner cheaper stuff and their bars and chains look a lot different and not in a good way.

I agree motor oil especially thin stuff like my trucks all use 5w20 isn't good
but no need to overthink bar oil either I probably overthink it enough with 10 and 30 weight jugs , if any major brand was really bad they would be buying people bars and chains for garbage lube. or manufacturers would tell you it voided the warranty to use anything but their brand.
on 2 stroke oil , I wouldn't use anything but a good brand , I buy the Husy or Jonsered because these are the saws I use but echo , stihl, efco, amsoil are all good

It is really not that critical what oily use. Some folks use corn oil. The stuff is only on there for a couple of laps of the chain before being thrown into the shrubbery. The main thing is that there is always fresh stuff coming out of the tank to replace what's being kicked off. The thicker stuff stays on a little longer but that is not necessarily a good thing. More so when cutting dirty wood as it then also keeps the grit and sand particles longer on the chain with it. I for one rather have that dirt flushed away from the bar and chain with a less sticky oil. Instead of it staying on like a lapping compound causing wear. Corn oil is sticky gummy and nasty, lol. One year the night before season open I decided I needed to clean my Rem 1100. If it ain't clean its a single shot, lol. Well it was late (you can see how serious of a deer hunter I am) about 10 pm and I tore it apart and had a can of oil but my wife had been into it for some of her important things and used it all. I had some trans fluid at the garage but didn't want to put my clothes on. The wife said why don't you use corn oil? OK sounds good. Went next morning and didn't shoot any. Waited for next season when it was cooler, shot a doe then was going to shoot another and gun hadn't ejected the empty. I couldn't hardly even pull the lever back and by the time I got a shell in it the deers was all gone. I could barely pull the barrel out of it and had to wash it in diesel to get that corn oil off. It cost too much for somebody like me to use for chainsaw, so I use used motor oil. We've had this discussion before and Hal thinks its too messy. I keep my saws so they put the oil on the chain and not on my clothes. And as stated above I like to be able to see it to know my pump is working. My theory is as much as 3 or 4 gal of saw oil cost goes a long way on my cheap bars and chains. I can't recall call my saws name I use but they are green, lol. I do miss Hal's input, lol.

I have my oiler on max put out and dump whatever in it (Chain oil any brand.) However, I'm no lumberjack by any means.

I like seeing oil fling off the tip of the bar. That tells you it is getting lubed well. If the oil doesn't fling off, I don't cut and find out what's plugged up.

Anyone who puts used motor oil in the bar oiler deserves a severe case of hemorrhoids. We see it all the time in the shop. They get charged more, because of clean up. It wrecks the oil pumps. Bar oil is not that expensive....... If I ever took a saw to a shop for any reason I'd deserve to have hemorrhoids, lol.

3togo,I use winter grade oil ,year round , it is thinner and you use more of it. Like to have my oil tank almost empty , when my fuel runs out.. . I think you pay several dollars a jug, for the name brands. I also use chain oil to lube bearings, pto shafts, any wear surfaces. Try a jug of the cheaper oil, works for me. old243 X2
