I’m told this is ‘petrified’ whale vomit but has been used as a scent enhancer for a variety of baits. I’ve also been told if you find it, you can’t sell it because it’s a whale product, and whales being considered endangered, it’s off limits, at least in this country. Ambergris oil apparently is sold thru some trapper supply dealers, so it’s available.

Does anyone use it in their baits? Lures?

The Ambergis that you can buy from the trapping supply places is synthetic. The natural ambergis was always outrageously expensive and very rare. It could be both found floating on the ocean and in the infected intestines or stomachs of sperm whales. Since you would have to kill the whales to remove it I suspect that was the reasoning behind outlawing trade in it.

Lure/bait makers, if you add it to your baits, who sells the synthetic stuff and I’ll assume you add it sparingly?

I would think most trapping supply houses and some lure makers that offer ingredients may sell it. There are in this case as always varying degrees of quality and potency. Ambergris has a very pleasant somewhat perfume fragrance to it. And yes the good oil can dominate a formula easily if you are not careful as to how much you add at first. You won't get it to dissipate easily if you add too much or if you try to mask it with something else.
