Any opinions on offset jaw vs regular jaw coilsprings, and trap size, for an upland predator line, could be anything from raccoon to coyote, might even try for a bobcat tag.

I realize this is like asking what is the best deer rifle calibre. I remember Trapper Art advocating the use of either a 1 3/4 or 2, 4 coiled, offset for Fox and coyote.

My impression, right or wrong, is that an offset jaw reduces damage to the animal's appendage, but for an animal like raccoon with a tapered leg it may actually make it easier for an animal to pull out. But I have read conflicting opinions on this.

I have only personal experience with regular jaw traps, 1 1/2 and 1 3/4. I know some very good trappers that use "large" traps, #3 bridger and mb 650, 4 coiled, offset. But they use these more for they "catch" area than for "holding" power.

Hoping to do some trapping, again in the next few years.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

I just recieved my regular jaw traps in a couple of days ago. I’ll let you know my comparison.
I was under the impression that offset was easier on the paws...not exactly my experience. Never lost any or released any, but couldn’t have sold them on the live market. Think it gives a little wiggle room.

OMG, that's gonna get somebody going! I have some of each, idk if it matters much, but laminations will help more than anything imo.
