I just spoke with Tom Parr. He said he believes Keith Winkler still keeps in touch with Helfrich, and may even be able to help direct you with parts...

Doesn't he have a book? I swear I read a mink trapping book by him. The Helfrich System something or other? Probably doesn't have much info on his specific traps though. I think he wrote a couple books, I'm sure I have some. The books were well before his traps came out though. He was a high-profile trapper back in the 70s and 80s.

He wrote several books, had articles all the time in the magazines and sold some great lures also.
He also wrote hand written letter's answering question's to a poor back woods kid struggling to figure out how to trap, for that i'll always be grateful.

Carroll Black talked of running a river trapline with Jim here in Ohio. I believe they trapped together for some time. Blackie had nothing bad to say about Helfrich and spoke fondly of that time in his life. Can you imagine the amount of stories and BS being slung around in a small canoe with those two characters on board!? WOW! There wouldn't be much room for anything else! If any members here have a picture of Jim, I request they post it here please, so folks know what the fellow looks like.

Profitable Fox Trapping & Profitable Coon Trapping, along with Hawbaker's Trapping North American Furbearer's were the first trapping books I owned back around '81 or so,
Jim Helfrich and Tom Miranda were the best from the tail end of the fur boom generation, IMO....Took instruction from Tom....Idolized those guys.
