Is it just me or are they way less common than they used to be? I have heard they can be a beneficial management tool. I suppose there's just too much liability with them around here.

Some habitats actually depend on that burn to maintain the local grasses and entire ecosystem.
Yessir (Callie's little brother is his real name ) grin would be a good source of information. His family and inlaws depend on burns to put gain on their cattle and with out burning its basically CRP so thick the pheasants can barely use it. The cattle (bison 200 yrs ago) cant eat the tall woody growth. Its basically worthless w/o burning and there are thousands of acres burned to make new growth for millions of cattle every spring.

Google flint hills and chatacwa hills in Kansas and OK.

Every spring we burn here to clean out the ferns. Sometimes you live in the smoke for days. When we get a dry south wind everybody burns. Ours is only about twenty acres but some are huge.

Control burns are a useful tool to manage warm season grasses and forbs. There are many acres of this type of cover in CRP. There is a narrow window in Spring and Fall when these can be done. Factors that influence control burns are : weather (wetness, dryness, wind conditions, etc), proximity of T&E Species, adjacent land use.

I got an email from FSA (farm service agency) the other day asking for us not to burn. They said the smoke is hard on lungs and emergency personnel at this time with CV19. crazy

There are others here that have more knowledge and experience with prescriber burns than I As stated burning off the woody growth allows the grass to come back and be a better food source for animals .Wildlife and domestic livestock both benefit Those burns also help the ground nesting songbirds that use the grass fields for nesting and raising their young ones Fire was a regular thing before the days of Smokey the Bear .Than every fire was a bad fire Many of the massive wildfires over the last 10 or so years are the result of too much tinder laying around because every fire is pit out. Controlled burns and natural fire are good for people ,livestock ,wildlife and the ecosystem
