Hey all, I haven't started mine yet, but have some very good advice on layout. How do you lay yours out, what do you use, do you GPS (if so, what do you use)? Just trying to get some insight for those (of us) that may not be as organized as others. Pics welcome. Thanks, in advance.

I just use the notes section on my phone. Each place is titled with a description of where and what caught at each location.

I use old ritentherain or durawrite waterproof notebooks left over from my surveying days. Kept one as a kid but then didn't keep one for years. Went back to keeping one on canines, several different lures to keep track of and at the end of the year I could look back and see which style of lure and which type of set had success. I often (not always because I never used one most of my life and I tend to forget) mark my sets on a gps. I use the same Garmin Astro I use to track my hounds with. Only gps I own.

One of these days when I get caught up, I hope to scan and post many pages from Herb Lenon's Trapline Log from way back 30's & 40's. Really interesting to read each day. Mr. Lenon kept detail of what he caught, worth and how much he had to spend. I had goose bumps when I read it as I ran traplines on same roads nearly a century after Mr. Lenon.
Areas he referred to as big timber were gone and prairies had transformed to timber. Asa gave it to me after he sold me the business. Cant wait to the Virus goes away so I can go visit my friend.

I kept a log last fall so I knew where and what bait and lure I used. I definitely need a better system tho. I am excited to see what everyone's logs look like

42) #3N - DDH - Ma6 - Back - CCall - Bur - fish farm - east levee rd

Set 42, #3N victor trap, double dirt hole, mast #6, Backbreaker, canine call(up high), bobcat urine

The left side of the notebook is left blank, if i make a catch in set #42 i list it as:

Very detailed, I like the simplicity...that's the type of thing I was hoping to see, thanks Blak Spot!

Tell him I said hello. He may not remember me but we talked a lot on the phone and I picked his brain about canine trapping. Use only Lennon's lures my first couple years and he helped me bunches. I still have the product catalog and some other stuff he sent me in a notebook. I still reference it now.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Hi Greg - I'm sure Asa will remember you. I wont forget to ask him when I get a chance to meet in person after this virus subsides. Stay safe my friend.

I like the medium size ruled notebook. My thoughts are to use each page for a single location. Landowner, Address, GPS Coordinates on the header. Left margin would be Date, and Set, Trap, Lure, Bait, Urine, Catch (across the page). Then, use each line for every next day, and note catches, and remakes accordingly. Plus, use multiple books (color-coded) for different target animals. Any thoughts, am I trying to make it too hard? I just want to be as organized as possible, so I can look back and see what works, and where.

Simplicity and consistency should be the important factors in a successful and useful trapline log, Different books for different animals would be unnecessary complication in my opinion. However, I'm a firm believer in documenting traplines and lure making. Even a young mind will forget detail in a year. Good topic Yukon John...,

Too complicated for me(color coded books). If you use a bound notebook, the right hand side is easier to right on if your right handed. Make notes on left side.
At the end of the season, i make notes on animals after going back through my notes written on the left side. I consolidate this at the end of my seasons "sets" pages.

GREAT replies guys, thanks, keep them coming! Blak Spot, my only concern (for myself) is that I won't transfer my notes later. I'm not a long line trapper, just a couple dozen sets for now (I know that is TINY!) I think I can afford to put more time into my initial entries, but I understand that others may not be able to. I appreciate the insight, and I have already changed what I intend to do, thanks again!
