Coyotes are hard to come by this year. It’s been 2 weeks or more since my last coyote. This time a young female caught on a Pipe Dream set with a liquid bait in the pipe and fox urine on the backing. [Linked Image]

Coyote trapping is a game of patience. As long as you are on location and do your part you will be successful.

Keep in mind, there may only be a pair in the area as coyotes are whelping now and guarding their core areas which are also smaller now.

Finding a set of tracks every 3-4 weeks is what I consider a “hot spot” out here, lol.

Coyotes seem to be more comfortable working a set that is in the open. This is only an assumption but the cover looks pretty thick where your set was. From what I have learned some coyotes do not like to work a set in cover they can't see over or see through.

Coyotes are paranoid, some more than others. Not saying you can't catch coyotes in heavy cover but think you will have better luck in the open and on location. Location is no doubt the key to success. Put the set where they can't refuse it. In other words don't make it easy for a coyote to ignore your set. They won't be able to not work your set if it's in their face. Just a coyotes nature. Good luck

That pic is somewhat deceiving. This is a quail plantation...think wiregrass and broomsedge with a little cover here and there. For the most part most sets are at the corners of roads or feed trails. Others are set at corners of small planted pines, some burned some not, but both harbor plenty of prey. Even have a few sets in the center of the two tracks. One thing I really have to worry about here is deer. Generally after a few times of being tripped, they won’t mess with them anymore. Setting next to a little cover keeps that from happening as much, but I’m guessing it’s also hurting me at the same time.
I’m moving cameras to the creek bottoms to see what might be traveling those areas now.
Thanks for all the advice. Keep it coming.
