That sounds like a good plan. How many do you have left with your current BADs?

I found a CR with a J Hook BAD and I compared that to my other CR with the crimped on BAD and I can cut that off and use a J Hook BAD. I will lose some diameter on my Loop but It shouldn't make much of a difference. WE have a loop stop on the CR so we can't have a loop bigger then 12".

I haven't tried It yet but I might be able to place that crimp on BAD Into my vise and try to open It up then I think I might be able to slide It off. Or if I'm careful I could use my dermal tool to just grind It off. If I could do that It would be a quick fix. Or maybe I could try and open up the loop stop then I could maintain my 12" loop.

You can cut that release ferrules off if you are very careful.I only use reinforced cutting wheels and safety glasses are a good idea.

Don't cut all the way through to the strands.Get close, then try to pry open with a small screwdriver or whatever works. You may want to use an annealed nut to replace the ferrule. You can make your own.Decide on the size nuts, heat them to red hot and let them cool slowly,on there own.A good way to do that is to cover them with sand, till they are completely cooled.

I have cut off a lot of deer stops and aluminum stops by nipping the sides open with a pair of sharp side cutters or mini bolt cutters.

beav, Sounds like if you have one to compare it to you'll be fine. Cutting off the stop would shorten your loop but the J-hook would add about the same length back to it so it should be a wash. I'd use a nut for the end stop instead of an aluminum stop on that 1x19 3/32 cable. A 3/16" nut should pound on pretty easy but wouldn't slip off. You could anneal them but its not nessary IF you hammer them on in a few softer hits VS one big hit so they don't crack.

I just went out and took my side grinder and ground off one side of the BAD and popped It right off. Took about 2 seconds with no cable damage. Do you think I could use brass nuts for the stops? They are soft to begin with and should be easy to hammer them flat without them cracking.

Know I just have to order the J Hooks.

Brass or copper can cause electrolysis when used on steel. They are called for on stainless cable but not steel.Plus, just not knowing if they would hold or not and they can crack if not annealed,I would stick to steel.

X2

If you were using 1/4" nuts I'd recommend the annealing but the smaller nuts like 3/16" you can just hammer them and they won't crack so long as you don't try and mash them in one big hit. I wouldn't go smaller like 8-32's or 6-32's for end stops though, they are ok for deer stops and limit stops but can slip with enough pressure.

Congrats Beav, pretty humbling isn't it? When I was inducted into the North American Trappers hall of fame it brought tears to my eyes. I was truly humbled.. You deserve it! We all do.

heat your nuts and let cool to be safe. don't put them in water or oil just let them cool down slow.
