I am planning to purchase an early Newhouse #5 and an LR bear trap today. any reply to this is purely academic as i plan to buy them anyway. im just curios as to a ball park value on the LR, i do not know the size for sure as this whole transaction has been via pictures. the traps are in good condition but since i am really a novice on bear traps i cannot attest to them being 100% correct. they are just going to go in my den and look purty since i guess i dont have enough stuff to stub my toe on yet. i would like to get an approx value range just so i have a snappy comeback when i get the inevitable questions. being on lockdown there is little hope of sneaking them in smile thx s

Put some pictures on. If it is the #5 Newhouse and LR that I heard of out there for sale, The LR has one Peevy spring on it, so that trap is a Marriage if its the one I saw pictures of. Never saw pictures of the #5 Newhouse, but was told it was an OC.

it is the one with the peevy spring. and forgive my ignorance, "OC"? i really just wanted them for my den, and while i dont want to get taken for a ride, i am not a serious collector nor have any intent on reselling. just wondered about a ballpark value. if i end up a little ahead or a little behind, im fine with it. im sure its the pair you are aware of. i nearly purchased a blacksmith trap but the antique dealer really thought he had gold. pics will be a bit of an effort right now, i have not shared files between various devices and am scattered due to covid. but will try in a bit

well, i have chosen to purchase the traps, provided the Newhouse OC number 5 is correct i am in pretty good shape. i have searched everywhere i can think of to find the correct spring for the LR trap, but have had no luck. i have found a few Oneida springs. does anyone have a group/source/starting point that i can look for a replacement spring. in honesty i dont care that it isnt correct as it is just gonna be something to stub my toe on in my den, but if i can find a spring for it that would be great and maybe someone could use the spring i have...........thx s

Beautiful trap, those spring stamps are really crisp. Trap prices is what somebody is willing to pay these days.

A grouping of blacksmiths that are possibly related that forged traps and associated with the extreme NE region (Maine). I’ve had different traps marked Orrin, Warren and Paul peavy and I think there was also a Daniel peavy. To my knowledge Warren peavy made bear traps only and the one I had was not nearly aesthetically pleasing as the work of the other peaveys.
