With traps numbered and recorded, you’d know if something was missing and exactly which one.

Just curious if anyone numbers their traps and how they chose to do it....

Thanks

We contemplated doing it, but after 1, we stopped. Too many tags fall off.

I've thought about engraving numbers on the bottom, but haven't done it yet. It sounds like a good idea.

Okay, this can't be coincidence! One of the technicians told you that I've been numbering cages, right? So far I've got about 150 squirrel cages numbered and about 50 others. It's not easy when the cages are in vehicles or on roofs, but it should be interesting to see how many we've acquired in the last 30 plus years!

I just started last year and have mostly havaharts. They all have the solid door and when I have them stacked I can't tell if they are a single or double door. I number the solid door with trap number and then dash 1 or 2 for either single or double door.

Look forward to upgrading to tomahawks or Comstock in the future!

I’ve engraved a number on BG frames and their dogs before. The problem I encountered was that what I use to engrave doesn’t really deep enough. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be done, but it’s going to take a lot of time to do it. It barely scratches it actually. One dip in rustoleum and the number is no longer visible. I’d like to number them in such a way that I’ll always be able to read it—-like a serial number. Cage traps would be different. I suspect it’s much easier to number.

I like the idea of numbered traps. I just need y to o find a way to do it.

I suppose dip or dye could cause a problem by covering the number. Good point Aix. That is something to consider.

What, are there some folks who do not already do this?

Sequentially numbered inventory control tags. Numbering traps is essential for inventory control, service life, depreciation, and asset retirement. It requires the creation of a database to keep track of all details. Then you can print reports highlighting any and all variables. Next comes various visual aids - graphs and pie charts that must be presented at corporate meetings.

Than records of every trap set, date, bait lure and urine applied. Dates checked. Catches, snapped empty, incidental non-target animal catches. Size, length, width, age, dna specimen from every catch. Another database. More revports and graphs.

Records of trapper details. Sober, drunk, hungover, tired, lazy, half-@$$ed effort, fall down get water in waders, on and on.

Maybe you do not want certain people or a certain person to know how many traps you really do own?

So, are you certain that you want to number your traps?
