Are any of you guys still snaring coons like this?

I was at a yard sale last summer and I asked the guy if he had any trapping stuff. He said he had some snare parts that were his ex girlfriends that she left behind, but he didn't know anything about them. I bought it all cheap, but couldn't figure out the system she was using until I stumbled upon this youtube video. He had about 100 wood stakes drilled with holes like Bernie does in this video and the same amount of 30" cuts of cable with stops on them. What do you like for locks in this situation?

Whichever your comfortable with. I run the system for coon and beaver. I do a modification though which is to run a midswivel to keep the snare damage down.

Those are very antiquated snares these days. It'll catch coons but there are much better ways IMO. Back when the video was made it was probably ok advice for what was available at the time.

In this market especially, you need to target neck catches, anywhere on the body will likely bring the already cheap pelts virtually worthless. That said, you need fast loaded snares with positive locking locks and they need set with the correct loop size and height for the coons size in your area. If your coons average 15-18lb you need a higher bigger loop than an area where the average coon is 10-12lbs. It's not hard to neck snare coons, but in doing so you will miss some of them.

I agree with ADC.I used that setup, many years ago for fox and it worked but there are better ways.I will say though,if you decide to use them, make 2,tight wraps of tie wire around the top of the stake and twist tight, with pliers. This will keep the stake from splitting and they will last much longer.I wouldn't get them near coyotes.

The ones I make are our of tomato stakes and they don't split. You might snap em occasionally if you hit em wrong with the hammer. I always take extras in case that happens.

It's a great system for running a walking line as they're very light and only require a hammer to setup. Don't have to have wire cutters and works everywhere that doesn't have rocks.

I have never been able to trap where there wasn't a lot of rocks.I'm jealous.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Sniper do you prefer 9 or 11 guage wire for the support off your stakes?

#9! You can get annealed (black) #9 that is easier to work with and doesn't get slick so your support collar will hold tight. The stiffer wire and solid support collar are a must to get your fast loaded coon snares to hold solid until the coons fires them shut.

9 ga. 11 is fine if you keep the length of wire down but I'll run mine a bit longer for when I use em on beaver.

Everything I run so far I do with 9 ga. cause I like how nothing moves until the lock fires. The pre-drilled holes in the wood were too small to accept the 9 gauge I tried to put through it. Figured Id ask before I went to drilling them all, and I don't have any 11 gauge. I'll have to check for number 9 annealed. I didn't know there was a difference.

It doesn't look like there is much difference but you can tell the difference immediately when you compare 11 to 9

If you're not confident in their holding ability...they do make great quick supports for your snares. Especially in really Sandy areas for beaver. I just won't look for sticks for snare supports. Ever. Trees maybe but they are rarely where I want them.
