I only use maybe a lima bean size glob of paste bait or a capsize amount of taste lures on sheep's wool, polyfill, or a marshmallow under the trigger. I never clean out the traps, the paste baits or lures do not go bad and do not gum up the traps. A pair of needle-nose pliers will pull out the sheep's wool or polyfill if I need to at the end of the season. Many times with the sheep's wool I can just reset the trap and not re-lure or bait inside the trap. I always put more lure on the lip. Everyone has what they do, and if you are getting 30 to 50% catch rates on the traps set in 5 to 8 days and happy with that go for it. The important thing is to understand and know WHY you do it. not just doing it because of whatever. My mindset is, and this is only me, I want 60 to 80% catch rate on the traps I set in 5 to 8 days. ( I am not going for numbers but catch rates.) ( numbers will come if my rates are up) That is my coon circuit for my area. ( I don't always get it but that is what I want) I rather set 20 traps that catch at that rate, then set 40 that catch at 30%. I am a method based on a location trapper rather than, a production trapper. BOTH WORK AND ARE RIGHT DEPENDING ON THE TRAPPERS STYLE I believe I use good baits and lure that produce, and want to use the best products, but in my mind Location and presentation is more important than baits and lures. The right location and presentation can make an ok attractant look great. Bad location and presentation can make a great attractant look bad. This is a northeastern coon trappers mindset. If I lived in the midwest coon belts or VA where you have more coon than ticks I may do things differently. By the way, it should be against the law the amount of coon you boys have compared to here in the northeast, just ain't right.
