Hello

So I'm going to trap a nuisance raccoon for some friends. And they have dogs and cats, I'm gonna be using DP's so I dont really have to worry about them getting caught in the trap but I don't really want them to be super interested in it either. So what I'm wondering is: Whats a good bait for DP's that will appeal to a coon but not cats and or dogs? Thanks!

Marshmallows and maple syrup, nothing better than that!

Cereal, the sweeter the better. You can add maple syrup, chocolate syrup or even honey to add to the attraction.

Inexpensive jelly grape or strawberry would work well also . Whatever you go with remember that at some point in time you'll run out of raccoons to catch and will have to clean up the traps ha ha

I like corn, fruity pebbles (the cheap bag kind) and the multi colored mini marshmallows mixed like trail mix. You can put a shot of cheep strawberry ice cream topping or maple syrup on top for a kicker if you'd like. Keep the dry mix in a jug or can with a screw on lid and it will stay fresh for at least a few months. I trap in alot of barns and cats are not interested BUT outside dont use the corn squirrels can be a problem. Not often caught but they will dig the bait out to get the corn.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Myside , this is not my idea (I believe I read it here on trapper man quite a while ago) but I tried it and it worked VERY WELL . Take a bag of full sized marshmallows and coat them with a box of strawberry jello mix . I cut mine in half , coated them and put them on a cookie sheet to dry a little then into a gallon sized zip loc bag for use . They fit under the trigger of a DP snug and are very hard to remove without firing the trap . I also put just a drop of Hawbakers raccoon lure (licorice smell) either on the lip of the trap or very close by . Dogs and cats don't seem to be attracted by it but coons seem to love it .

If that dog is a house dog, used to eating people food, it will be interested in anything you put out. May paw around on your trap till you have a fired trap lying ontop the ground

I had a similar situation where I trapped some coon that were getting into a farmer's corn crib and making a real mess. He had about a dozen cats. While cats can get caught in DPs, they will pretty much ignore them if you use the right bait. I used miniature marshmallows. Put a couple on the ground around the trap to whet the coon's appetite. Of course, the coon will see the real bonanza is inside the trap and will greedily try to get them.

I have never had or heard of any incident of a dog getting caught in a DP. You can catch skunks and possum in DPs, however. Unlike cats, possum and skunks do like marshmallows.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

Put a red solo cup over your trap and the cats shouldn't mess with them .
I have a D-P set 5 feet from the barn cats food dish ,
catch coons about once a week , never caught any cats ,
don't overthink the bait , they're there to eat .
I use dry oatmeal with a little lure on top .

Either stab a large marshmallow on the tigger or tear it up, depending on the type of dp and use cavens moonshine. I put a drop or two inside the dp on the marshmallow and a drop on the lip of the dp. I also rip a marshmallow in half and place it on either side of the dp in the trail. I think the white slows them down, and it gives them a taste. If uve ever watched a coon cross a road comin down a trail, youll notice how fast they sometimes move. Anything to slow them down.
