What are your thoughts on the use of big pans on k-9 traps. Would they work in place of pan covers when using the Zagger bedding method?

Imma go ahead and tell you 90%of what your about to hear.
And save all the regulars some breath
Toe catches
We used to cut pans down
I want the foot centered.
Make them step where you want
Oberto used to use traps with quarter size pans
I've never used them but all I see are toe catches.
Thrown paws
If pans need to be that big they're come like that from the factory.
I'll use them on bobcats in exposed sets but that's it.

That being said though I think I remember hearing zagger talk about liking the idea of big pans for his system instead of steel screen on on of Clints Trapping radio shows but not sure if it he ever tried them.

X2 nailed it I haven't tried them and I'm not good at hotel trapping but the way I see it is if you have just enough pan that the foot can't get between the jaws and the pan but no more you shouldn't have toe catches and you would have a much bigger trap pan. Like I said just the way that makes sense to me but could be wrong.

I use them on exposed bobcat sets only and love them. Andrew said he catches a few coyotes a yr in exposed sets but I never do.

If you are committed to trying big pans, consider double long springs as there are no levers to get in your way.

Never believed an animal standing on the jaw and setting off the trap was a good idea Nowdays using larger traps with heavier 4 coiled jaws and heavy pan tension maybe not an issue
As far as set covering probably work as good as wire although Zagger's method is to let heavy rain pass thru
You'll learn more by trying than by advice due to different soil and weather conditions elsewhere
