Is there a reason not to wax over speed dip? or it's just not necessary ?

For all the flack speed dip is given, I’ve only had great experiences with it. I’m not a great canine trapper, so as far as odors go, I’m not able to vouch for the gas based dip. But as far as ease of application, durability, and rust proofing of this coating goes... I think it’s the best hands down. Mix it thinner and you’ll be fine.

Hot wax over speed dip Is going ruin your speed dip application and also ruin the wax.
I would leave the speed dip in the can and use the wax.

I’ve done both: speed dip alone and speed dip then wax. Like Beav says, just do the dip and you’ll be fine. If you think one cost isn’t good enough dip-let dry and dip again. I think the Andy Stoe instructions suggest 2 costs of dip the first time.

If you want a wax coating over speed dip, try an odorless liquid floor wax. Just let it dry thoroughly before using.

waxing over dip has no purpose Again dip works for canines but the trap must be clean to start with

Like many I mix much thinner than the directions say. I don't know my exact ratio but will try the 2-2.5 gals per qt. this summer mentioned above. I sort my traps each year and many I only do every 2-3 years (water traps or coon traps). I hang mine after dipping. Before I box in totes for the season every trap gets looked over again and I file the dog notch out and file the dip off the dog and the end of the dog. I find tat important, especially in water sets where the water makes whatever is in the notch or on the dog more slippery and more easily sprung.

Use Latex paint for BGs and water traps. It's fast cheap and It works. You can dip today and set them tomorrow. No smell no sticky mess and easy clean up. If there Is a reason to re dip during the season It's not a problem.
2 gallons of "free" water and one gallon of latex paint. Mix well dip shake hang and let dry. The paint likes to separate so you need to stir a few times during your dipping.

I don't know why more trappers don't go this route.

I did 4 coats of speed dip. Doesn't look pretty.. but who cares. They did dry, and I have them airing out in the basement. I did thin it out a tad more than the instructions...
Now to get rid of stinky gas.. as I don't want it laying around for a year...

I wouldn't do it again...

I believe I'm gonna try this. What type of container works best for dipping?

I use a 5 gallon bucket when doing foot holds but if your doing large BGs then you should use some type of tote. Something about the same size as the BG so you can get the depth you need to cover the traps.

Experiment with the mixture ratio. Start out with a 1 to 1 ratio and see how that works for you. You can always add more water.

A bucket is what I was thinking also, I'll definitely give it a shot, thanks!

Beav how well does it hold up to a long season catching fur compared to other methods such as Speed dip, rattle can, or other cold dips? I might have to give this a try. Do you get more than one season out of traps between treatments? Thanks

I use It on my BGs and rat and mink traps. Those types of traps don't see a lot of wear from the caught critter so It holds up just fine. I have 160s I use for chuck trapping and they were painted years ago and still look like I just painted them. Same with my rat traps.
Dipping In rustoeulm may be a better choice but It will cost you a arm and a leg if you have a lot of traps. It takes a lot of paint to get the depth you need to cover the trap while dipping.
Trap dip will cost you anywhere from $50.00 a gallon to $40.00 a gallon + shipping I bet you can buy some mismatched latex paint for a lot cheaper.

I never tried it but I bet driveway sealer would work. You can walk on It In a few days and It doesn't stick to your feet or the truck tires. And It's pretty cheap.

Look up Memphis Net and Twine and look for net coating they sell 2 types one Is petroleum based and one Is water based. I don't know If It would work on traps but I was told by a well known trapper that It is sold as trap dip just under different names.

I like the Speed Dip and have had no problems. I use Colman Fuel, and I dip them in summer then hang them up on the side of my shop till season. It is a strong coat on the traps. Like Stated above some traps dont need to be done the following year unless just beat up during season.
I am no pro trapper though.
