Fish that is. We go out of Pirates Cove/Oregon Inlet every year for tuna and this year was no disappointment. The weather this past Saturday was 4-7’ seas at 7 second intervals with rain and thunderstorms along with fog. We caught all of them in green water in 27-35 fathoms. The big ones are yellowfins the smaller ones are blackfins and the 5 silver ones with stripes along their bodies are skipjacks. I broke off a bigeye at the boat and we lost two to sharks. That’s 460lbs of tuna less the skipjacks and the head. We use the skipjacks for bait. [Linked Image]

Nice! It’s been in the back of my mind the last few years to go catch a bunch of Tuna one weekend and make 20-30 thousand dollars.
Maybe when the kids move out.

I got queasy just from the mention of 4-7 foot seas. I would love to see the Gulf Stream, but I am certain that the day I picked would end up being like the worst episode of Deadliest Catch.

John, did you go out with One of our own trappermen and NCTA member, Joey Van Dyke?
If not who was your guide/captain?

Believe it or not 4-7’ wasn’t that bad. We never really made it out to the stream. We started in 72* blue green water and worked back into 67-69* water that was green. That’s where we caught most of the fish. Anyone that wants to go the cost for the boat and tip for the mate is $380/person for a six person trip. I’d be glad to go with y’all if you want to book one. Our captain has a real job so he fishes Fridays and Saturdays for charters and Sunday the owner fishes. He mostly chases billfish.

No we go with Kenny Midgett on the Marlin Gull out of Pirates Cove. He likes to leave about 4:15 to be the first boat on the break.
What boat is Joey running?
