So I made a batch of yote bait for the first time this year. Added glycerin to antifreeze it, a pint per gallon. Threw some in the freezer last night in a 4 oz lure jar to see the results today. The thermometer in the freezer said it was -5f. The small test sample was a little hard but pliable still. Just not sure whether that is good enough or if I should add a little more glycerin?

I think I would make some test sets first to see if it works as a bait before I would worry about it freezing. But -5 and still pliable isn't bad.

That's on my to do list next, got 7 trail cams out now. I tried digging thru some threads and the archives to find an answer but I couldnt turn anything up. It gets pretty darn cold here in my part of oregon during season so was curious what y'all thought or how you test your bait to the cold.

I made coon/mink bait. I was cheap and used salt. Put in freezer and was pliable like yours.

Should only have to be pliable enough to get it out of the bait jar so you may be good to go as it is now.

X2. Glycerin inhibits odor a little. Something you dont need in cold weather. Remember your high school physics classes? Cold by definition is LESS movement of molecules. Including the molecules that create odor. Antifreeze won't reverse that. It can slow it even further though. So if you can still get it out of the container your golden.

16 oz should be plenty,if mixed in well.I like to grind my bait so that glycerine and SB can mix in well.I use a Jiffy Mixer in a drill to mix my baits.I am not so keen on salt for land set baits where there are a lot of deer or rabbits.I use it on fishy baits for mink, etc. In pocket sets and boxes, however.Lots of good advice above.

It is also a good idea to keep notes about your baits and lures, how long aged, what is added and when,etc..I often put masking tape on the containers when I add something and later, that information goes in the book when completed.

I've been testing the affects of glycerin and SB in formulations the last couple of months. The animals can smell them in a bait and they do affect the attractiveness of it from the results I'm seeing. Food for thought. This is on coyotes only.
Has anyone else done any side by side testing with either of these two products to see what the effects they have? I'd be interested in comparing notes if anyone has.

What i did was take ground deer and added either SB or glycerin to it. I then made two punch hole about a foot and half apart. Put straight deer in one and deer with the additive in it to the other hole to see which would get the most intrest. Did this on 9 locations for both SB and glycerin. Probably do the same again in the fall to see if I get the same results.

My dog will break his neck to get some of my beaver bait up until I add sb and glycerin, then he’ll sniff it but won’t eat it. This bait is freak beaver without any tainting and some glands. Wish I could find a antifreeze and stabilizer that doesn’t put him off

Ive gotten by the last 2 years without any antifreeze in my lures and baits without any problems. All the commercial stuff i have pretty much freezes solid if put in a freezer but I have no issues with it when temperatures drop into teens or single digits at night around here. I think most formulations take cold weather a little bit better than we think without any added antifreeze.

You should test and see if its the SB or the glycerin that turns your dog off
