I'm sure this has been done with sodium benzoate. Anyone ever do this? Thinking about fresh deer blood this fall. Thoughts?

That might be the best way.
What i was thinking was to add a little good lure to the blood in a squirt bottle to add a couple different smells to the set after a time with no action or a new set. Was thinking it might work good on deer hair or sheep's wool down a hole. I do the same with urine but want something different for a change up. Anyone ever do this?

What do they do with the blood you donate for transfusions ? I don't think they add anything to It. It seems to me they just keep It In something like refrigerator.

They add plenty of stuff to blood used for transfusions, phosphates, dextrose, anticoagulants,on and on.Freezing is also used.I really don't know much about it or how much of it applies to our usage.Maybe freezing is our best choice?I would like to learn more.I have seen canines and cats show a lot of attraction to blood trails and am sure mustelids do to.

That's a good point beav, it would be nice to be able to use the blood fresh without any additives. That could be added to Laz's thread about deer and cattle neutral, but i have no idea if it would be effective but shouldn't be overly attractive to large non targets . Not sure how long blood stays good being refrigerated but don't think it would work for me. I'm thinking blood will stay good longer if sealed from oxygen, if not to me anyway think it would coagulate pretty fast and be at best hard to work with.

So the question is would preserving keep it somewhat fresh and workable from a squeeze bottle for a few months? I'm looking fast and easy.

I bet you could find someone In your area that Is killing beef or hogs and get all the blood you need then just freeze It In smaller containers. Then when you need it just thaw out one at a time. you could just put It In quart sized freezer bags.

If you have Russ Carmen's lure making book he talks about working with fresh blood and how to keep it from clotting, etc.

I've used spoiled beaver blood before. Had a couple beaver carcasses I had chunked for bait and left the carcass and guts in a tote for a few days before I hauled them off. The blood that ran out of them didn't clot so bad like deer and elk, and when it started to spoil it turned back to liquid. I just filled a squirt bottle with it and used it at a couple of dirtholes and flat sets as a changeup. Had a coyote at one and when spring thaw warmed up had an early moving skunk work one, luckily it was a wolf set and the pan tension was high enough I didn't end up with the skunk wink
Didn't seem to have the attraction of a good lure, but as a changeup for something different or for trap shy critters it does hold some attraction.

I do have that book but forgot about what his thoughts were. Thanks

Sounds like something would have to be added to the blood to have the best and most reaction. As far as i know there are only 2 natural fluids a person can use to add smells to a set in a squeeze bottle. I like to be able to give quick squirt down the hole and be on my way.
