I know lots of guys catch big numbers of chucks in the right places, more than we catch. We did 14 at one location and 31 at another. Due to the surrounding area where we got 31 being left untrapped along a railroad track they keep coming back, "job security." Already did 9 more there this year and may end up with others later as they keep moving in, a real honey hole. Have had a couple of areas where we took 13 for a couple of years but now they are pretty much gone. Have not caught many young so far, only a couple. Best part with baitless trapping with double door cages and nose cones is that there are no non-targets. Can't tell you how many times we hear from clients, "we had a guy last year who caught everything but the woodchucks, raccoons, possum, skunks, but never got the chucks," or, "they used bait for a week and caught nothing at all." Makes them a whole lot happier when you set a trap at dark and are done by morning, job done with no extra charge for unintended catches. One NY trapper set 7 positive sets just a few days ago after hearing there were 2 large and 5 small chucks. The client was pretty impressed when he caught all 7 in one day.

Jim, wonder if you're catching somebody's releases, lol.

Guess what, that surely does happen. There was an infamous ADC local character, now wanted by the law unless he turned himself in, who used to let chucks go behind his rental house in a cemetery. It was good for a couple dozen in two years. That guy was a bait trapper I'm guessing, so positive sets worked fine, no issues as it was something new for the chucks. I believe many of what I catch are releases because of where they show up in the mountains, not chuck country. Even in towns and cities I suspect some "do gooder" didn't have the heart to dispatch, so they are now everyone's problem. Chucks seem to be everywhere and anywhere. One lady told me how she moved a chuck down the road a couple of blocks, a real "problem solver," NOT. Had a guy let a possum go on me yesterday, took it "way" up into the woods, a solid 100 feet. But, gotta love it, job security. As long as the public keeps transporting and releasing we will be in business forever.

We have ground hogs in the mountains of Virginia. I assumed that they were there naturally because we're 20 miles from town. We have lots of them by the way.

I started a job on Mon I set every hole I could find . Ran out of traps after setting 15 160s. Went across the road to set up a muskrat job, set that up and went back to check the chuck line. Had 5 already and 3 were pregnant females. Is that common at this time of the year? I finished the job with 18 chucks 7 being pregnant females and 5 young of the year. The other 6 were males.
And I left some for seed. LOL

My record is 33 at one den opening in 45 days - from July 1 to August 15. After catching a female and the half sizers, most were wandering males. Caught one nearly everyday until it slowed and stopped.
