LE asks for ID at a traffic stop. Person asks why they have been pulled over. Officer says ID first and then will tell you. Why won't LE just tell the person when asked right away?

Why isn’t LE required to inform the person pulled over without having to ask?

In my case, the officer pointed out my offense right away. I’ve never been pulled over, so I don’t know what actually happens or is supposed to happen. Seems you should be informed at first contact though.

Every time I have been pulled over, they ask if I know why they pulled me over. I say no sir, and then they proceed to tell me.

Around here the officer will first say “do you know why I pulled you over?”. IMO Based on what you say you can get multiple tickets admitting to something the officer get original notice. lol Yup, The NYS Troopers and various other NYS police entities always ask for your license, registration, and proof of Insurance at the start of a traffic stop. Then they ask YOU if you know why they have pulled you over. Any statement you make helps them form evidence of a charge against you. Then when writing up the ticket, there is an actual printout of you incriminating yourself. I say absolutely nothing during a traffic stop unless the officer states an unfounded, untrue, or inaccurate reason which amounts to a lie. Then I will respectfully call them on it. I generally don't answer any questions on where I am going, or where I am coming from. I may sometimes admit that I am out for a drive for no specific purpose, or to no particular destination at all. I am polite, respectful, and follow directions to the letter, but don't offer any conversation that may be used against me. I never submit to a search of my VECHILE LOL If asked, I always cite the 4th Amendment, and request a warrant to search detailing the specific area of my VECHILE they wish to search, and the specific items they hope to seize. I almost never get a ticket any more, or am "let off" with a warning. Moral of the story is don't let the cops "chat you up" in NYS. w

LE asks for ID at a traffic stop. Person asks why they have been pulled over. Officer says ID first and then will tell you. Why won't LE just tell the person when asked right away? Because what you're being charge with may effect your reaction to the charge. The police officer wants the information first, he doesn't want you having it first. if i tell you what i'm arresting you for before i confirm your identity you can get away based on your reaction to the "potential" charge, giving you a chance to fight or run. The cop wants your ID, so he can check who you are, check your priors, before telling you a charge, so he is best prepared to handle any potential reaction to that charge.. it's in the best interest of officer's safety to identify the person you're dealing with FIRST, so you have all the best information. if i give you the charge, then you have the charge and your background, you have more information than me as a cop. i don't want that imbalance. if you're on you have warrants, if you have a history of resisting, if you have reason to flee.... ETC.... there are a million reasons a cop should have all the information. it's their life at risk

They always ask "where are you going?" I've replied more than once " to grandmother's house I go" this has always got me more questions like "how much have you had to drink tonight?"

“Do you know why I pulled you over” is asked on purpose to get you to admit that you knew you were doing whatever it was you were doing. Most people have a “script” so to speak and say the same thing at each stop.
“I’m so-and-so with such-and-such department. Do you know why I’m pulling you over? It was for so-and-so. Any reason why you would have done that? (Sometimes there’s a good reason.) Can I see your license and insurance please? Thank you, hang on and I’ll be right back with you.” Same thing, every time...
There’s no reason not to tell someone why you pulled them over. Arguing or refusing to tell someone why you pulled them over just makes your life more difficult, escalates things unnecessarily, and generally makes you look like a turd. Kinda stupid to do if you ask me.

Needing to show registration, drivers license, and insurance is also about getting you to talk. They can run your tag and they have all of that, including your photo, before they ever even approach the vehicle. But making you provide the paper copies gives them a reason to look around your vehicle and engage you in conversation in the hopes that you'll admit something.
