I'm now completing what is essentially an essay examination as part of my MFA program. One of the questions asks:
"As a graduate student, which types of presentation are the most valuable?"
That sentence sets off my grammar alarm. Shouldn't it read something like:
"As a graduate student, which types of presentation do you find the most valuable?"
After all, I am in an advanced English program. I just sent an email to the director.
Jim The first seems to ask for an objective answer(s). Your question calls for the subjective. That's the diff I see.

Greg, you are right. That's how I'd prefer to see it written.
But I'm mainly interested in whether their version was grammatically improper, not whether it was well written.

It's an invitation to BS, so that's what I'll give them, I suppose.
Jim That of course....! But remember my good man, that this is the year 2020. What REALLY matters is how the sentence "makes you feel!" Pete

Anything I can understand is grammatically correct.
Then, again, I am studying conversational Spanish, with absolutely no grammar or spelling

Jim The first question asks for a fact, or facts. The answer would be backed up with references. A graduate level student would be expected to provide references for his/her answer. (Was it ok to use gender specific words?). Your question, James, asks for an opinion. You ask the question like a liberal would, the answer based not on facts but on how you feel about types of presentations. Remember James, we search for truth, not facts! I don't see anything wrong with the "grammar" of either sentence. I only have a high school education tho!

"Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver UAA welcomes senior citizens to its classrooms and waives tuition for those eligible under Board of Regents policy R05.10.080.B. Regular tuition shall be waived for Alaska residents who meet the following criteria: they must be age eligible to receive full (unreduced) social security retirement benefits and they must register on a space available basis. "Space available basis" means when courses can accommodate such students in addition to other enrolled students." Just a guess!
