I am taking my 28 yr old son on his first Elk hunt this October. I have clothing from Cabelas that I am happy with that I have had for years. Now since Bass pro has taken over it is mostly redhead clothing. Not sure on what he should get but also do not want to break the bank since hear in NY we wear insulated camo coveralls in treestands and out there we will be on horses. Any suggestions on the Bass pro or similar ?

Man , I hope you guys have a great time. You don't need the fancy high dollar crap. Just bring enough to layer up depending on temps . A decent pair of boots , even work boots with about 400 grams of thinsulate . Mink oil them up. Some cheap gloves for cold mornings .

Take lots of pictures

I hear you on the hi-end stuff. Since Cabelas has sold out to Bass pro it seems to have gone down hill in variety. We mostly hunt tree stands at home so movement is not much of an issue. I have been on 3 hunts so far so I am good on what to bring. Can't find decent stuff for him. maybe too early in summer to look ? Nothing out yet maybe ?

I second antigov. Neighbor shot a moose in his undies last year...be it lucky to have one right out the back door.
Cousin has about 2k into his gear and has only taken 2 elk in 10 years..he swears by his copper cloth.

No special clothing as far as camo etc.. Layer clothing of our choice to stay warm, dry and comfortable temperature for you is all you really need. I hunt them in jeans and what ever outwear I grab that day.

Always love the hunting shows where the host goes decked out in all his/hers sponsor’s scent lock mossy tree camo head to foot. While the guide is in jeans and flannel shirt.

You can wear jeans and flannel and get the job done. It just depends on how comfortable you want to be while you're doing it. Some outdoor clothing is overpriced, some is not. S&P is correct, Rockslide is a good resource.

I would do your research and then start looking around for a good deal. https://www.sierra.com is a good place to start.

I don't hunt with sticks and stones but I'm a natural gear camo fan for hunting coyotes they make a variety to choose from that I feel is worth taking a look at.

I'm sure your aware of this already but there's a few grizzly bears in that area from time to time so be mindful and have a great time ! Take a bunch of pictures !

I wear the same stuff I wear trapping. Bank on wool if it's going to be nasty weather wise. I just laugh at all the dummies in kuiu, first lite type stuff. Most of those guys are worse than women when it comes to fashion needs.

Be prepared for anything. Last year on my Colorado elk hunt we got 2 1/2 feet of snow which made it difficult. We weren't as prepared as we should have been and it cost us a couple days of hunting.

I had a cheap set of redhead raingear that worked well for keeping my legs dry trudging through the thigh deep snow. I had to duct tape the bottom of the pants to my boots to keep out the snow but other than that I was good.

I would never pay for the high dollar stuff, personally but,, I was given a pair of Sitka pants 2 trapping seasons ago, and they are Nice and durable !! This year for my birthday, my wife got me a pair of kuie (sp). Haven’t tried them yet, so no reports. I’m sure they’ll be fine. Still use the layer system. C-O-L-D

I'm a polypropylene long john under wrangler jeans and a wool shirt and the last layer is natural gear winter camo when hunting coyotes . Deer and elk hunting in deep snow or wet conditions I get out the wool pants and coat .

I also believe in layers during the fall winter and spring .

I have been very lucky finding hunting cloths at second hand stores, and I like wool.
The most important thing to me is good boots and binoculars.
Good Luck

Big bill wool gear. Silent and warm, blends in nice and is reasonably priced. In the state's I think big bill is the same as codet. Gostwear.com has good selection. Sloooow processing times though.

I live close to where your talking about, maybe even in the area

In early Oct it can be blazing hot, but you can also expect snow at any time. The end of Oct it will more than likely be cold.

I prefer wool but it can be heavy.

In the last year I have bought Sitka heavyweight top, plan on buying the bottoms. When the top is combined with either a thin wool or synthetic base layer it does a great job of keeping you warm.
Where you are going it could be 10 degrees in the morning. Maybe snow. OR it may be dry and warm on an off year. Plan for both including a wind proof layer (preferably with a hood). Just in case.
Carry a decent day pack and you can take off or put on as needed.
I grew up near Utica, NY, but have hunted Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado many times since 1981. You need to be prepared for anything.

I will vouch for kuiu clothing. I was hesitant to spend the coin but it holds up really well. Its pricey for a reason, theres alot of r&d in technical clothing. Its actually a bit cheaper than sitka or first lite. Its suited me fine for Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Montana. Can it be done in jeans and a flannel, absolutely it can but I'd rather be as comfortable as possible. We dont horseback or wheeler in we have to walk it. Generally 5 to as much as 8 miles into the wilderness. I only take very little clothing so having something warm that also breathes really helps with that.

Definitely. A guide for our outfitter was mauled 2 yrs ago by a grizzly. Bear spray & Glocks will be on the ready. And if we get something one of us will be on guard at all times.

An actual quote from rokslide:

Quote
Puffy function question

"So in thinking through my system, I have a stone glacier grumman jacket. Its a little big on me... I'm normally a medium but went with large. I keep going back and forth on keeping the large or going for a medium. Keeping the large makes sense if I wear it over a base layer, mid layer fleece, and maybe my peleton 240. However, I hate baggy jackets and wonder if a medium just makes more sense. So for those who run a puffy, or are you running more of a fitted puffy or baggy to wear over layers? I hope that makes sense....

Thanks for the feedback."

I swear this world is getting gayer every day.

First off .......men wear down jackets, ..........they don't "run fitted puffys".

Second.......if you've been on this planet for 20 October's and don't know how to dress, hunting isn't for you.

3rd........rokslide's banner should be a QBLT pride flag. If one of the kuius put a label on a pink xxxxx hat, the new crowd would stand in line to get em, and pay $300 for it.

This toxic femininity will be the end of us.

If what a guy wears angers you this much, I'd hate to see how you handle life. But I'm sure the op appreciates your helpful opinion on what to wear.

Ever see the bike rider guy? Got the tight spandex shorts and tshirt with the weird helmet and special made shoes? Same guy wore cut off jeans no shirt and Chuck taylors as a kid and rode his bike twice as far.

Good looking gloves, but for that price I would think they should be gortex or similar material.

Ive got wool and a full set of kuiu . I wear different gear for different hunts and conditions. Have i hunted in wranglers you bet and still do. Kuiu is a great layering system and i wear it trapping at times . Its amazing how much more freedom of movement there is in the pants compared to jeans or wool. As for puffy jackets just another name for the high end down that you dont want the loft of the down compromised.

I have underclothes from a place called Sporthill. Thin or medium weight polyester type stuff. They are marketed as running clothes. I have been very satisfied with this clothings performance.

Light weight wool if it's warmer, heavier if it's cold. That is all I have ever needed.

I should have listened to you. I wish I wouldn't have bought the Kuiu Super Down Pro Glassing Glomitt gloves. They aren't very good. They're noisy & they don't seem to keep my hands any warmer than cheaper gloves. They're bulky & really hard to maneuver a bow release with. The biggest issue might be that they don't fit tight around the wrist, letting cold air in. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I wouldn't recommend them. Save your $ folks.
