I'm looking to build some more conibear boxes, and I happen to have a bunch of 1/2" OSB laying around. I know the stuff isn't really designed to withstand the elements. But I'm thinking a couple heavy coats of an oil based paint that they would last a while. Anyone ever use OSB for this application?

No but had to cover two attic windows and all I had was OSB so I painted them up with a couple coats of oil base and that was 5 or 6 years ago

Yes but you don't want to have to carry em very far. Where I plan on using them I have atv access, so weight isnt really an issue.

They work fine. If you take a 1x1 piece and put in the corners to nail or screw into it will hold even better. Nailing OSB to OSB isnt to practical to last. But with a kicker scab piece in the corner you can nail or screw both pieces to it and it will be stronger. Couple coats of paint and it will be alright.

OSB expands a tad when it gets wet. The coon won't notice.

Squirrels chew them up much quicker than plywood boxes.
The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Yes, I was going to mention if he planned on leaving them out like a lot of guys do marten boxes, OSB is not a good idea simply because a fair percentage of them will be ate up by next season. If he is picking them up he ought to be fine.
