I just dipped 2 traps in water based deck stain. Came out perfect. Dries very fast. No nasty gasoline odor. Not as thick as the water based dip from professional trappers.
It should be very durable, as it's meant for decking / foot traffic. And it adhered very well to metal.

We'll see how it holds up in the ground... but I have no complaints so far.

and it washes off my hands pretty easily.... unlike the speed dip.

Bury a couple when they're good and dry.

I started tuning the deck stained traps. Scraps right off the dog. Much easier than the nasty speed dip.

Should have kept quiet and done your research.

If it works out you can buy it in bulk, pour it up in quart and gallon cans, put your own label on it and start making money laugh

Deck stains are formulated to provide protection of wood through penetration/absorption. I would be sceptical of it providing a durable finish to traps.
Let us know how it works for you.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The problem with deck stain.. it's very expensive. $55 / gallon. and you can't water it down. It's not trapper marketable as shipping a gallon of paint is expensive . .rather than shipping a quart of speed dip or formula 1.
and dye is also very shippable. Deck stain, and paints are shipped on a pallet into Home Depot, or Aboffs... and they ship palletize. Trucker rates.

and no trapper is paying $55 for a gallon, plus shipping, when they can buy other stuff much cheaper. not to mention a few blocks of wax cost a few bucks.

There are much cheaper methods... I just had this laying in my basement...
